The Diamondbacks right-handers J.B. Bukauskas and Chris Devenski already are on the injured list, but the club still seems to be bracing for even worse news for the pair of relievers.

Bukauskas was placed on the 10-day injured list with a flexor strain in his right elbow on Saturday, but manager Torey Lovullo said he believes the team is trying to determine whether there also is damage to Bukauskas’ ulnar collateral ligament. The UCL is the ligament that is repaired during Tommy John surgery.

“We haven’t had an official diagnosis yet,” Lovullo said. “You get the MRI and you get second opinions to confirm exactly what’s going on. That’s where we’re at right now.”

Bukauskas, 24, has shown flashes of dominance during his month-long stay in the majors, but the rookie has also struggled with consistency. In 8-? innings, he has two walks, eight strikeouts, 14 hits allowed and a 8.31 ERA. He was part of the deal that sent right-hander Zack Greinke to the Houston Astros.

Devenski’s situation sounded even more grim. He was placed on the injured list with a “sprained right UCL,” according to the club, which put him on the 60-day injured list rather than the 10-day, a move that suggests the issue is serious.

Asked if surgery were an option for Devenski, Lovullo said, “He’s weighing out all options right now.”

Devenski, 30, made the club after signing a minor league deal by putting together a strong performance in spring training. He opened the season pitching in high-leverage situations but after making two appearances he left the game for more than three weeks due to personal reasons.

Moving along

After playing games in consecutive days at extended spring training, center fielder Ketel Marte traveled Sunday to Reno, where he will begin a rehab assignment in Triple-A. The club had been considering bringing him back from the injured list without sending him to a minor league affiliate, but Lovullo intimated that he pushed for the extra step.

“It was my opinion that you’re going to wake up, you’re going to get in the car, drive to the ballpark, have a normal pregame activity, play against a team in another uniform, hit every two-three innings based on where the lineup is, collect your thoughts and prepare yourself as you would for a big league baseball game,” Lovullo said. “I think there’s some importance to that. Naturally the intensity is ramped up as well in a Triple-A game compared to a game on the backfields.”

Marte has not played since the first week of the season after suffering a right hamstring strain.

Short hops

Infielder Wyatt Mathisen, whom the club designated for assignment last week, was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations. Mathisen went just 5 for 41 (.119) with one homer and five walks in sporadic playing time before being removed from the roster.

*The Diamondbacks had not yet announced starters in the upcoming Dodgers series beyond Monday, when Madison Bumgarner will pitch opposite Walker Buehler.
