A customer at a north Phoenix drugstore shot and killed a man who was attempting to rob the store Tuesday night, police said.

The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m. at a Walgreens in the 3400 block of West Union Hills Drive, Sgt. Jonathan Howard said.

According to initial information from witnesses, a customer shot the man as he attempted to rob the store, Howard said.

The suspect was seriously wounded when police arrived. He died about an hour later, Howard said.

The customer who fired remained at the scene and was being interviewed by police.

No additional information was immediately available.
