Tie game

An over-the-should 15-yard catch by Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald in the corner of the end zone tied it at 14 late in the third quarter.

Earlier in the drive, Fitzgerald also made a key 37-yard catch.

With that touchdown catch, Fitzgerald passes Marvin Harrison for eighth on the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list (14,581).

Cowboys push ahead

The Cowboys grabbed their first lead in the third quarter, scooting ahead 14-7 after a herculean effort by receiver Dez Bryant.

Bryant caught a 15-yard pass from quarterback Dak Prescott and pushed to the end zone amid a sea of Cardinals players.

All tied up at the half

The Cowboys scored a touchdown on a 10-yard run by quarterback Dak Prescott, who leaped on keeper and was flipped end over end by Cardinals defenders Antoine Bethea and Justin Bethel.

It’s 7-7 as the players head for the locker room.

The Cardinals were ravaged by penalties in the second quarter: Holding and offside calls and a big 15-yard unsportsmanlike flag on defensive tackle Frostee Rucker.

Some halftime numbers:

Total offense: Cardinals 152 yards; Cowboys 57 yards

Passing: Carson Palmer 15 of 118 for 145 yards, one TD, no INT; Dak Prescott 5 of 26 for 25 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT

Rushing leaders: Andre Ellington 2 carries, 11 yards; Ezekiel Elliott 8 carries, 31 yards

Receiving leaders: Larry Fitzgerald 8 receptions, 46 yards; Noah Brown 11 reception, 13 yards

Cardinals can’t finish it

On its second possession of the game, Arizona chewed up nearly 10 minutes of clock with Carson palmer going 12 of 13 for 130 yards, but they came away with no points.

A holding penalty on right tackle Jared Veldheer negated a 10-yard scoring pass from Palmer to Jaron Brown.

The Cardinals had to settle for a field goal attempt, but then Phil Dawson’s 36-yarder was wide right – his third missed field goal in three games.

After two possessions by each team, the Cardinals have out-gained the Cowboys 142 yards to 4 and hold a 7-0 lead here in the second quarter.

Cards score on first possession

Carson Palmer was 5 for 5 for 79 yards, including a 25-yard scoring strike to Jaron Brown as the Cardinals score on their first possession to take a quick 7-0 lead over the Cowboys with 9:59 remaining in the first quarter.

Palmer hit Jermaine Gresham for a 20-yard pass, then followed up with a 10-yard throw to tight end Troy Niklas, before hitting Larry Fitzgerald for four yards and Andre Ellington for a 20-yard gain to help set up his touchdown pass to Brown.

The scoring drive covered 82 yards in eight plays and consumed five minutes and one second.

No anthem protests

Players, owners and executives locked arms in a show of solidarity during the national anthem, but there were no visible protests with players kneeling.

The Cowboys players and management knelt together- briefly- before the large U.S. flag that covers the playing surface at University of Phoenix Stadium was unfurled, drawing some boos from the crowd, but they stood before the anthem began.

Singer Jordin Sparks performed the anthem and had a reference to a bible verse written on her hand: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute,” Proverbs 31: 8-9 reads.

Turning heads

Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer arrived at University of Phoenix Stadium Monday to face the Cowboys in the team’s home opener, but he looked more suited for a pool party.

Palmer entered the stadium with an inflatable unicorn strapped to his waist, its pink horn bouncing side to side as he walked.

It’s likely the outfit was inspired by the bucket challenge, a weekly competition among the quarterbacks and cornerback Patrick Peterson that has the group try to throw a football inside a bucket. The loser wears a special get-up before the ensuing game with an elf, UGG boots and a bikini-inspired look among the previous costumes.

J.J. Nelson active for MNF

Cardinals receiver J.J. Nelson, who was questionable to play Monday night because of a hamstring strain, is active.

Nelson practiced on a limited basis all week, but will play against the Cowboys.

Guard Mike Iupati (triceps) is inactive, as is inside linebacker Deone Bucannon (ankle), who has yet to play this season.

The other Cardinals inactives are quarterback Blaine Gabbert, running back D.J. Foster, left tackle D.J. Humphries and defensive tackle Xavier Williams.

Jaylon Smith returns

It’s great to see a healthy Jaylon Smith return to University of Phoenix Stadium, where he shredded his knee in college playing for Notre Dame.

Smith, an inside linebacker for the Cowboys, went through an incredibly lengthy rehab after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a torn lateral collateral ligament and a stretched nerve in his knee.

He’s leading the Cowboys with 23 tackles entering tonight’s game against the Cardinals.

Pre-game Roster Move

The Cardinals made a roster move today, elevating tight end Ricky Seals-Jones from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster and releasing linebacker Phil Wheeler. The Cardinals have been hit hard at the tight end position with injuries, thus necessitating the move.

Seals Jones (6-5, 243) joined the team in May as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Texas A&M and spent the preseason with the Cardinals until being released on Sept. 2. He was signed to the practice squad a day later.

Wheeler, a 10-year veteran, has now been released from the Cardinals three times since signing with Arizona on July 27.

Cardinals-Cowboys game notes

The Cardinals and Cowboys have met six previous times on Monday Night Football, but have not faced off on Monday night since 1995. That Christmas Day affair turned out to be Buddy Ryan’s last game as coach and general manager.

It’s been more than a month since the Cardinals last played at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals finished the preseason with two consecutive road games and opened the regular season with two more on the road.

The Cardinals enter Monday night’s game with a 9-3-1 record in prime time under head coach Bruce Arians, including a 3-0 record on Monday night football.

The Cardinals and Cowboys have played a series of close games in Glendale, with the three most recent games decided on the final play:

  • Dec. 4, 2011: Cardinals 19 Cowboys 13. Cardinals RB LaRod Stephens-Howling scored on a 52-yard touchdown reception.
  • Dec. 25, 2010: Cardinals 27 Cowboys 26: Cardinals K Jay Feely kicks a 48-yard field goal as time expires.
  • Oct. 12, 2008: Cardinals 30 Cowboys 24: Cardinals OT Monty Beisel returns a blocked punt for a touchdown.
