A Cochise County sheriff’s chaplain was arrested Saturday on suspicion of sexual abuse, officials said.
Doug Packer, 63, was arrested after the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office command staff was advised of an inmate claiming an inappropriate incident had occurred at the Bisbee jail, the Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page.
“My disappointment is indescribable and this office will always do what is legally and morally right to protect those we serve,” Sheriff Mark Dannels said in a statement.
Dannels ordered an investigation on Friday after receiving information about the inappropriate incident, and after sheriff’s detectives conducted interviews, a search warrant was issued on Packer’s residence in Sierra Vista.
“Chaplain Packer was in a position of community trust, and based solely on his actions and poor decisions, he violated his sacred oath of office and took advantage of those who truly depend on him in their time of need,” Dannels said.
Packer was arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse, sexual assault, and unlawful sexual conduct in a correctional facility.
Packer had an initial appearance on Saturday in court, where a $25,000 bond was set.
