With the free-agency frenzy set to begin, the Suns are positioned to make potentially significant moves.

While teams can’t officially set up meetings until Friday, the Suns are expected to visit Clippers star Blake Griffin on Saturday in Los Angeles. In addition, they are expected to meet with Atlanta forward Paul Millsap, a four-time All-Star, on Sunday.

Griffin, 28, recently opted out of his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent, one of the more attractive names on the market.

Free agency starts at 9:01 p.m. Friday. At that time, teams are free to start recruiting and negotiating with free agents. Although both sides can agree to terms, nothing can be finalized until July 7.

BICKLEY: Could landing Blake Griffin be Suns’ crucial next step?

Griffin – the No. 1 pick of the 2009 NBA draft – is a five-time All-Star. The 6-10 power forward just completed his seventh season, all with the Clippers. Last season he averaged 21.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists before a toe injury ended his season after 61 games. Injuries have been a problem throughout his career, robbing the forward of some of his trademark athleticism.

According to reports, the Clippers plan to make signing Griffin a priority, but the recent trade of All-Star point guard Chris Paul to Houston might make that difficult. The Clippers could offer a maximum contract of five years for $175 million. The Suns could offer a max deal of four years for $130 million.

Griffin was due to make $21.4 million next season.

During a recent podcast, Griffin listed Phoenix as an underrated place on his Mount Rushmore of NBA cities. He would add experience and star power to an organization that hasn’t reached the playoffs in seven years.

The big question: Would Griffin want to join a rebuilding project over a contender? The Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics and Miami Heat also reportedly have interest in Griffin. A positive for Phoenix: The Suns training staff has a solid reputation of improving health and extending careers.

Entering his 12th season, Millsap ranks among the Eastern Conference’s top frontcourt players. Last season, the 6-8 big man averaged 18.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Hawks would like to re-sign Millsap but perhaps not to a maximum deal. With the salary cap projected at $99 million, the 32-year-old forward is eligible for a max contract of five years for $201 million with the Hawks and four years, $149 million with another team.

Suns coach Earl Watson knows Millsap well. He played with him for three seasons in Utah near the end of his career. Phoenix assistant Tyrone Corbin served as head coach for one of those teams. The Suns also signed Millsap’s younger brother, Elijah, near the end of last season.

Phoenix is coming off a strong draft in which management thought it addressed the team’s biggest needs – perimeter defense, shooting and toughness – removing some of the urgency attached to free agency.

At the same time, the Suns have nine players age 23 or younger, including draftees Josh Jackson, Davon Reed and Alec Peters. That’s why Watson didn’t hesitate when asked about the team’s biggest need.

“Experience,” he said. “Also, (we need to) stick with the theme. Have guys who can be good people who have grown throughout this league, who can take Josh aside and let him know there’s always room to grow. Guys who can teach them how to be professionals on and off the court, in the weight room, on the court prepping and working out. That’s the biggest thing.”

The Suns might need frontcourt help.

Center Alex Len and forward Alan Williams are restricted free agents, giving Phoenix potential matching rights should the big men receive offers from other teams. With Len, this could lead to a tough decision. The No. 5 pick of 2013 draft, Len, 24, has been considered the organization’s center of the future, but with starter Tyson Chandler shut down in last season’s second half, Len didn’t take advantage of increased minutes.

If Phoenix pursues cheaper options, San Antonio center Dewayne Dedmon and Memphis forward JaMychal Green could be possibilities. The 7-foot Dedmon, 27, is limited offensively, but his defensive skills earned him minutes much of last season. He started 37 of 76 games, averaging 5.1 points and 6.5 rebounds.

The 6-9 Green started 75 of 79 games for the Grizzlies, averaging 8.9 points and 4.9 rebounds.
