A Christopher Columbus statue in north Phoenix was vandalized overnight on Sunday, Phoenix police said Tuesday.
Someone acting alone or with others put red paint on the statue near 12th Street and Northern Avenue, according to Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Jonathan Howard.
An investigation is ongoing.

Other Columbus statues across the nation, from Connecticut to Chicago, were vandalized as well.
Columbus Day became a national holiday in 1937, but some question the Italian explorer’s place in history. Columbus is also criticized for his treatment of Native Americans, prompting some cities to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day in lieu of Columbus Day.
