The Los Angeles Chargers will likely have to wait a while to see their top rookie in action.
Wide receiver Mike Williams, the No. 7 overall pick out of Clemson in April’s NFL draft, is expected to miss all of training camp as he recovers from a back injury.
“Mike saw our doctors yesterday and he will continue to progress on Dr. Robert Watkins’ plan,” the team said in a statement. “He will rehab and strengthen his back and is not expected to practice during training camp.”
General manager Tom Telesco said last week that Williams had been “responding well” to treatment. Williams was placed on the unable to perform list on Saturday.
Asked Sunday if Williams could be out for the season, first-year coach Anthony Lynn said, “I’m hopeful that he’s not. But who knows? … I don’t know.”
Cornerback Jason Verrett and safety Darrell Stuckey were also placed on the physically unable to perform list.
