Police arrested a man in Cave Creek on Sunday who authorities said pointed a rifle at a department helicopter and fired at officers on the ground.

The shooting happened near Cave Creek Road and Desert Willow Parkway at 10 a.m., The intersection was closed because of heavy police activity.

Some residents of the area were evacuated, police said.

Police responded to a domestic violence call. Information in that call was that one of the people involved was possibly suicidal.

As officers arrived, they saw a man in a front yard who was pointing a rifle up at a police helicopter, said Sgt. Alan Pfohl, a department spokesman. The man then pointed the weapon at officers.

“There was an exchange of shots,” Pfohl said.

No officers were hurt, Pfohl said.

Police arrested the man, but did not immediately release his name.

Roads near the area were expected to be closed for the next five to six hours.
