The Cardinals’ depth chart at running back became clear on Monday with the news that Andre Ellington has re-signed with the team.

Ellington, an unrestricted free agent, agreed to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not immediately available.

Ellington was one of three Cardinals running backs on the free-agent market. Chris Johnson has said he is looking for opportunities elsewhere, and Stepfan Taylor remains available.

The Cardinals now have David Johnson, Ellington, Kerwynn Williams and Elijhaa Penny under contract for the upcoming season.

Coach Bruce Arians has used Ellington in a hybrid role over the past four years, and Ellington often has lined up as a receiver. That role could grow in 2017.

A sixth-round pick by the Cardinals in 2013, Ellington has had an up-and-down career, partly due to injuries.

He played in 16 games last season but carried just 34 times for 96 yards and didn’t score a touchdown, all career lows. His 12 receptions were his fewest in four seasons.

Cap status

The team’s flurry of activity in the opening days of free agency left it $20.5 million under the salary cap, according to figures on the NFL Players Association’s website on Monday morning.

That figure doesn’t include contracts signed by Ellington and inside linebacker Karlos Dansby.

USA Today reported Dansby’s one-year deal is worth $2 million, including $700,000 guaranteed.

That would put the Cardinals around $18 million to $19 million under the cap before Ellington’s signing.

Spring visitors

Outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, the Steelers’ first-round pick in 2013, visited the Cardinals on Monday, an NFL source confirmed.

Jones, an unrestricted free agent, has other trips planned, so it would be a mild surprise if he agreed to terms with the Cardinals in the next day or two.

With only six sacks over four seasons, Jones has been a disappointment for the Steelers, who reportedly remain interested in re-signing him.

The Steelers did not exercise their option to keep Jones, 27, under contract for a fifth year.

The Cardinals are interested in adding an outside linebacker to play behind starters Chandler Jones and Markus Golden.

Alex Okafor filled that role a year ago and is an unrestricted free agent.

The Cardinals are interested in re-signing Okafor, but he likely is looking for a starting job via free agency. He reportedly visited the Saints on Monday.

Former Cardinals inside linebacker Kevin Minter visited the Colts, according to reports. The Cardinals signed Dansby last week, an indication they are content with Minter moving on.
