Two series into the third quarter and the Cardinals are basically going nowhere fast. The offense just hasn’t been able to put together any sort of consistent drive here in the second half, having to punt twice already.

Carson Palmer is 2 of 5 for 27 yards in the third quarter.

I agree with the Fox game analysts who are saying the Cardinals’ defense is going to have to step up and win this game. They’ve done a decent job today since the end of the first quarter, but they’re going to need to start forcing some turnovers, I’m afraid, for Arizona to win this thing.

–Bob McManaman

The Cardinals’ offense has yet to find a consistent rhythm, and quarterback Carson Palmer is taking the brunt of the criticism for it.

Fox sideline reporter Laura Okmin said, when asked what wasn’t clicking offensively, coach Bruce Arians told her, “The QB. That interception was inexcusable, taking points off the board before the half.”

Palmer was intercepted in the waning minutes of the first half by Colts safety Malik Hooker.

Fox’s Michael Strahan wondered if this is the version of Palmer that will stick around all season.

“This is a little surprising, especially since (Jared) Goff for the Rams threw all over this Colts defense last week. You expect Carson Palmer to do the same, but he’s been struggling to get on track. … It’s going to be interesting to see how Carson Palmer goes through the rest of the season. Is he going to become a better player like we expect? Or is the path that we can expect every week from Carson Palmer kind of be on the decline?”

Fellow analyst Howie Long said Palmer “doesn’t look comfortable” after rushing himself last week against the Lions.

“(The Cardinals) weren’t happy with his performance last week and certainly that hasn’t changed in the first half.”

 First-half recap

The Colts are leading the Cardinals 10-3 at the half and Arizona was driving for at least a field goal when Carson Palmer was intercepted on a deep pass by rookie safety Malik Hooker.

Here’s a look at some of the statistics through the first two quarters at Lucas Oil Stadium:

Total offense – Cardinals 189; Colts 96

Passing – Palmer 11 of 21 for 162 YDS, 0 TD, 1 INT; Jacoby Brissett 7 of 15, 73 YDS, 0 TD, 0 INT

Rushing leaders – Chris Johnson 3 carries, 22 yards; Frank Gore 7 carries, 21 yards

Receiving leaders – J.J. Nelson 3 catches, 44 yards; Frank Doyle 4 catches, 43 yards

Third-down conversions – Cardinals 3 of 7; Colts 5 of 9

Penalties – Cardinals 5 for 31 yards; Colts 1 for 10 yards

Cardinals settle for a FG

What could have been another touchdown turned into a 27-yard field goal by Phil Dawson and the Cardinals trail the Colts 10-3 with six minutes remaining in the first half at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Here’s what went wrong:

A holding penalty on Troy Niklas nullified a 21-yard run by Chris Johnson. A false start by Evan Boehm in the red zone pushed the Cardinals back to the 9-yard line. Ifeanyi Momah dropped a wide open pass.

The good: J.J. Nelson made a pair of beautiful catches, one of which would have been a touchdown had he managed to get both feet in before his momentum took him out of bounds. It was reviewed and the TD was correctly overturned. Johnson has looked very good on three runs thus far and has shown  some real speed.

Offense on hot seat

After going three-and-out on their first two offensive looks for zero total yards and then failing to convert on fourth-and-goal on Drive No.3, the Cardinals’ offense is on the hot seat.

Concern has started to simmer amid a letdown of a debut on the heels of last week’s loss to the Lions, especially considering the opponent. The Cardinals are in a tough spot without running back David Johnson, who’s expected to be out two-to-three months after dislocating his wrist, but the Colts have a major issue of their own: quarterback Andrew Luck remains out after offseason shoulder surgery.

Cardinals go for it, fail

The Cardinals had a chance to pull within a field goal, but after getting to the 1-yard line and electing to go for a touchdown on fourth down, Carson Palmer’s pass in the end zone to Larry Fitzgerald fell incomplete.

Earlier, Andre Ellington couldn’t get set in time on a play change by Palmer and the Cardinals had to burn a time out on third and goal. From the 15-yard line, Palmer was able to hit J.J. Nelson for a 14-yard gain, but the drive fizzled with the fourth-down pass attempt.

The big play to set up the potential scoring drive was a perfect throw down the middle by Palmer to a wide open tight end Ifeanyi Momah in stride for a 46-yard gain.

I don’t fault Bruce Arians for going for it on fourth down at the 1. You’re on the road, trailing 10-0, and you might as well stick with the no risk it, no biscuit philosophy.

Slow start

Adam Vinatieri boots a 46-yard field goal and the Colts, heavy underdogs, now have a 10-0 first-quarter lead over the Cardinals.

Jacoby Brissett has looked very good thus far at quarterback for the Colts, converting a handful of third-downs already and showing great athletic ability to escape pressure and avoid sacks.

Arizona’s offense, meanwhile, looks stagnant once again. It’s early, but things better start to pick up in a hurry.

Colts go up, 7-0

A specials teams penalty on Rodney Gunter gave the Colts an automatic first down and instead of a taking the field goal, Frank Gore ran for a short touchdown to give Indianapolis a 7-0 lead over the Cardinals in the first quarter at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The “leverage: call on Gunter, to me, looked pretty ticky-tack, but he did violate the rule.

Cardinals inactives

As expected, the Cardinals will be missing four starters on offense when they play the Colts today.

Receiver John Brown (quadriceps), left tackle D.J. Humphries (knee), left guard Mike Iupati (triceps) and tight end Jermaine Gresham (ribs) are inactive.

Quarterback Blaine Gabbert, linebacker Deone Bucannon and running back D.J. Foster also are inactive.

Running back David Johnson is such a versatile player that it’s going to take a village of Cardinals running backs to replace him.

Here is a breakdown of other running backs on the roster and how they might be used.

Kerwynn Williams: This is his fifth year in the NFL and is expected to make his first start on Sunday.

CAREER STATS: 103 rushes, 555 yards, 5.4 yard average, 4 TDs. 6 receptions, 35 yards, 0 TDs.

Andre Ellington: Ellington probably not going to become the team’s No. 1 back, but he will see more playing time.

CAREER STATS: 697 yards, 4.3 average, 9 touchdowns. 114 receptions, 1,034 yards, 3 TDs

Chris Johnson: The Cardinals’ offensive line is built for power football, but Johnson’s favorite play is the zone stretch, which requires linemen to block on the move. It’s possible the Cardinals could do both. If Johnson shows his old burst, he could supplant Williams as the starter.

CAREER STATS: 2,118 rushes, 9,537 rushing yards, 4.5 yard average, 55 touchdowns. 302 receptions, 2,212 yards, 9 TDs

Elijhaa Penny: Penny played his first game last week and likely won’t get many carries this season unless there are more injuries. At 234 pounds, he could be used in short yardage occasionally, including at the goal line.

CAREER STATS: None

D.J. Foster: He was signed off the Patriots practice squad this week. He’s learning a new system so it’s unlikely he makes a contribution any time soon.

CAREER STATS: 7 rushes, 24 yards, 0 TDs. 1 rec, 2 yards, 0 TDs

Cardinals vs. Colts game notes

  • The Cardinals make their first ever appearance in Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, and are playing in Indianapolis for the first time since 2005.
  • Cardinals coach Bruce Arians is returning to Indianapolis for the first time since 2012, when he was the team’s interim head coach and offensive coach.
  • Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald enters the game needing 118 receiving yards to pass former Colts receiver Marvin Harrison for 8th place on the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list. Fitzgerald, with 14,463 career receiving yards, is currently in front of former Colt Reggie Wayne who sits in 10th place on the all-time receiving list.
  • Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson and Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri are the only two active players in the NFL who made their pro debuts in the 1990s. Dawson was on the Patriots practice squad in 1998, when Vinatieri was in his third season as the Patriots kicker.
