Communications problems
Coach Bruce Arians has handed off play-calling duties to assistants this season, and so far the results have been good.
Coordinator Harold Goodwin called plays against the Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game, and the Cardinals scored touchdowns on their first two possessions.
Quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich called plays last Saturday against the Raiders, and the Cardinals opened the game with a 14-play touchdown drive.
There were some glitches against the Raiders, however. Leftwich called plays from the coaches’ booth near the press box, and the quarterbacks at times had trouble hearing. It was a technical issue.
“We had to burn a couple of timeouts,” Arians said. “That’s something we’ll have to address, the volume to the quarterbacks’ headsets. But I thought he (Leftwich) did a really nice job.”
Arians hasn’t said who will call plays Saturday against the Bears. The team’s schedule is a bit different today, and Arians will meet with reporters after practice instead of the usual 11 a.m. gathering. Practice is expected to end between 4 p.m. and 4: 30 p.m.
Keim discusses rookies, team’s progress
The Cardinals are pleased with the performances of their two top draft picks this year, linebacker Haason Reddick and safety Budda Baker, but both players are going through typical rookie struggles, General Manager Steve Keim said on Monday.
“You want to see guys play full speed,” Keim said on his weekly appearance on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “They are going to make mistakes. See them make them fast.”

Drew Stanton played well, completing 11 of 15 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. He was calm, in control and obviously comfortable running this offense.
When he was pressured, Stanton did a nice job moving around, and his touchdown pass to tight end Troy Niklas came after he drifted out of the pocket and to the sideline.
Entering camp, Stanton had a firm hold on the No. 2 job. For him to lose it, he would have to play awful and Blaine Gabbert would have to be great.

Breaking down the Cardinals’ performance vs. Raiders
The Cardinals’ performance in the first half of their preseason game Saturday night against Oakland likely will bring smiles to coach Bruce Arians and his staff.
It’s not that it was flawless. But the good far outweighed the bad, and there were just enough mistakes mixed in to keep everyone humble and hungry when the fourth week of training camp opens on Monday.
