Now we know one of the reasons why there’s a sense of excitement crackling around the Arizona Cardinals: Urgency, and it starts with the man in charge.
Coach Bruce Arians says in his new book that he beat cancer and is ready for “at least one more season of NFL football — maybe more.”
It’s great news for those who love him, something to be celebrated.
Urgency and energy
The statement is also an acknowledgment that it’s now or never for this group.
There’s no way Arians comes back after another sub-.500 year, right? And if he goes, does veteran quarterback Carson Palmer stick around for a regime change? I wouldn’t count on it.
“Now I feel great,” Arians writes. “My energy has returned.”
This reads like he coached without juice in 2016.
Can you imagine trying to get through an NFL season on battery-saver mode? No one would have blamed him for stepping away to focus on his health.
Coach’s mentality
We don’t know when the team found out, but we know that players have gotten the message.
“We’re a resilient group,” Palmer said in a news release. “I think that trickles down from the head coach.”
He went on to say “really good teams, and hopefully great teams, take on their coach’s mentality.”
Arians displayed mental toughness in getting through last season without complaints or excuses.
Adding that mindset to this group — stocked with players who remember being a game from the Super Bowl 17 months ago and flirting last year with a playoff run despite a 1-4 start — could provide the sort of emotional intangible that makes all the difference.
There’s no mistaking the buzz, which was apparent during summer workouts. But that can cut two ways: Urgency and energy can fuel championship aspirations. They can also be used to warm a hot seat in the ultra-competitive, results-driven NFL.
