The Cardinals look to get back on a winning track with a divisional matchup against the 49ers. Stay with this page for updates and analysis throughout the weekend.

At halftime, it’s all tied at 6

Phil Dawson connected on 43-yard field goal with 1:24 left in the second quarter and the Cardinals and 49ers are tied at 6.

The Cardinals probably should have scored at least two touchdowns before that but once again, their red-zone efficiency on offense has been lousy.

First, Carson Palmer gets intercepted in the end zone after a long drive to open the game. Then, an apparent touchdown catch by Andre Ellington gets revered upon review and the Cardinals had to settle for a Phil Dawson field goal.

They were driving nicely once again late in the second quarter, but it stalled at the 49ers’ 37-yard line and Andy Lee was brought in to punt.

The Cardinals caught a break just before halftime, though when veteran safety Antoine Bethea, who spent the past three seasons with San Francisco, intercepted a Brian Hoyer pass and returned the pick 16 yards to the 49ers’ 30-yard line with 1:54 remaining.

Palmer could only complete one pass on his next three attempts, however, and coach Bruce Arians had to bring in Dawson. Palmer was hit on each throw and he’s on pace to get hit at least 14 times.

The pressure on Palmer was to be expected, considering the state of Arizona’s shaky, reconstructed offensive line. The right side has actually held up rather well, except for two holding calls against guard Evan Boehm. Most of the pressure Palmer is feeling is coming from the left side.

The 49ers have two field goals by Andy Lee, one from 49 yards and one from 39 yards.

Palmer is 15 of 27 for 183 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Brian Hoyer is 9 of 19 for 113 yards with no touchdowns and one interceptions. Neither team has been able to run the ball. The 49ers have rushed for 24 yards on 10 carries, the Cardinals 20 on 11 carries.

Wrong call?

The Cardinals should be up 10-3, or at least that’s how Fox rules analyst Mike Pereira sees it.

Periera, a former vice president of officiating in the NFL, tweeted that the 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carson Palmer to Andre Ellington should have remained a touchdown instead of being overturned like it was.

Review determined Ellington did not have full control of the ball, wiping the score off the board, and the Twitterverse couldn’t believe it.

Later in the second quarter, the 49ers added a 39-yard field goal to go up 6-3.

Cardinals tie it at 3

The Cardinals thought they had scored a touchdown on a 12-yard pass from Carson Palmer to Andre Ellington, but a replay review reversed the call and it was ruled Ellington didn’t have  full control of the ball on his back-shoulder catch in the corner of the end zone.

Instead, Arizona had to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Phil Dawson with 11:07 left in the first half. The Cardinals drove 63 yards on nine plays.

49ers lead 3-0

The 49ers went 45 yards on 10 plays, capped by a 49-yard field goal by Robbie Gould, and San Francisco leads the Cardinals 3-0 with 2:05 remaining in the first quarter.

Patrick Peterson gave up an 18-yard pass completion from Brian Hoyer to Marquise Goodwin to start the scoring drive and Carlos Hyde added a 12-yard gain up the middle. The 49ers faced a 4th and 1 at the Cardinals’ 38-yard line and went for it, with Hoyer plunging ahead for a three yards.

Close, but no cigar

The Cardinals won the coin flip, chose to receive and marched the ball down to the 49ers’ 4-yard line only to see Cason Palmer force a throw into the end zone while under duress, and Ray-Ray Armstrong picked it off for a touchback.

The Cardinals efficiently drove 76 yards on 12 plays before the interception. The offensive line, featuring John Wetzel at left tackle and rookie Will Holden at left guard, held up rather well. Palmer was hit a couple times, but not sacked on the opening series.

Receiver Larry Fitzgerald caught one pass during the drive, extending his consecutive games streak with at least one catch to 199.

Less than a week after locking arms in unity across the end zone, the Cardinals stood on their sideline during the national anthem ahead of Sunday’s game against the 49ers at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Across the field, the 49ers had a row of players stand behind a row of kneeling players – a display that did stir some boos before the anthem.

Demonstrations continued across the league on Sunday after protests swelled last week following criticism from President Donald Trump, who called for NFL owners to fire players who didn’t stand for the anthem.

After standing together during Monday’s game against the Cowboys, a plan that was finalized after one team meeting, cornerback Patrick Peterson wasn’t sure if the Cardinals would continue to line up the same way for future anthems.

Dansby set to play in 200th

Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby will appear in his 200th NFL game today. Among active defenders, only Julius Peppers (238), Terence Newman (209) and Terrell Suggs (201) have played in more games.

Humphries inactive

It wasn’t hard for Cardinals coach Bruce Arians to decide what seven players to make inactive today. Most of them are hurt.

Left tackle D.J. Humphries (knee) suffered a setback in practice this week and is inactive. The best guess is that John Wetzel remains the starter there with Will Holden, a rookie, starting at left guard.

Guard Alex Boone (pectoral) is inactive, as is defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche (calf). Other inactive players are quarterback Blaine Gabbert, receiver Chad Williams, cornerback Tramon Williams and running back D.J. Foster.

For the 49ers, running back Carlos Hyde is playing. He was listed as questionable.

Blaine the baby

Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer arrived at University of Phoenix Stadium with an inflatable unicorn strapped to his waist ahead of Monday’s game against the Cowboys.

On Sunday, quarterback Blaine Gabbert was in costume – dressed like a baby as this week’s apparent quarterback bucket challenge loser.

This isn’t the first time this season Gabbert has had an interesting get-up before a game. He dressed as a bear for the flight to Detroit for Game 1 against the Lions.

Cardinals-49ers game notes

The Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers will meet for the 52nd time in history this week. The Cardinals have won five of their last six games against the 49ers and hold a 4-0-1 record in their last five games against NFC West opponents.

Larry Fitzgerald tied his career high in receptions with 13 catches in a Monday night loss against the Dallas Cowboys. Fitzgerald has 154 career receptions for 2,067 yards and 16 TDs against the 49ers, more than any other receiver in history.

The Cardinals enter Week 4 with a 1-2 record and play their second straight game at home.
