An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was injured Friday afternoon in Phoenix in a collision with a vehicle that may have been carjacked, officials said.
The car struck two other vehicles as it fled from the trooper, officials said.
The driver of a silver BMW rear-ended the trooper’s motorcycle, dislodging some equipment on the bike, at 24th Street and McDowell Road, said DPS spokesman Raul Garcia.
The car then fled east, crashing with two pickup trucks at 32nd Street and McDowell, Garcia said.
After the second collision, the trooper confronted the suspect and deployed his Taser in order to arrest the man, Garcia said.
The suspect, described as a “young male,” suffered “moderate” injuries and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, Garcia said.
The trooper suffered minor injuries in the initial collision and was transported to a local hospital as well, Garcia said.
The drivers of the two pickup trucks were not injured, he added.
Prior to the collision, the motorcycle trooper had been pursuing a black vehicle on Loop 202 that authorities suspected was stolen, Garcia said. That pursuit was terminated, and the trooper exited the freeway onto the city streets, he said.
Garcia confirmed that DPS is working with the Scottsdale Police Department to determine whether the BMW is a vehicle stolen at gunpoint Friday morning in a Starbucks parking lot at 9301 E. Shea Blvd.
He said the car’s description and license plate match those of the stolen car.
In the carjacking, the victim pulled into the Starbucks parking lot about 5:30 a.m. when a vehicle boxed him in, and an armed man wearing a mask approached him and demanded his car, Scottsdale police reported earlier Friday.
He gave up the car, and the man in the mask got inside and drove away. The vehicle that had boxed him in left in the same direction.
Scottsdale police said the victim couldn’t provide a description of either the carjacker or the other vehicle.
Scottsdale police said they had no updates on the carjacking incident late Friday afternoon.
