The New England Patriots released quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday and it didn’t take long for lists to pop up naming potential landing spots for QB.

The Arizona Cardinals showed up on one such list looking at three “logical” landing spots for the quarterback.

NJ.com published the list and included the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals as the three destinations for Newton.

Mike Kaye wrote of the Cardinals: “Like Wilson, Cardinals starting QB Kyler Murray is a mobile passer. Newton could come in and be an upgrade over incumbent backup Colt McCoy. Newton knows the pressure Murray faces as a former No. 1 pick and the two have similar skill sets. Newton could be a mentor to Murray while he looks to rebrand himself as a veteran backup.”

Some other writers also speculated about Arizona being a potential landing spot for Newton on social media.

Would Cam Newton make sense in Arizona?

Kaye’s comment about Newton mentoring Murray sounds nice, but would Newton sign with a team to be a backup?

Would Arizona want Newton as its backup?

The team seems pleased with its quarterback room at the moment, with veteran Colt McCoy a big upgrade from Chris Streveler as the team’s backup.

Streveler, the No. 2 QB a season ago, is currently No. 3 on the depth chart.

Newton, and his running ability, could come in handy in Arizona, but the Cardinals have bigger issues to address at the moment, including what to do at cornerback.

Signing Newton would appear to be a very long shot for Arizona.

Not the first time Cardinals have been linked to Cam Newton

Before the 2020 season, the Cardinals were linked to Cam Newton in NFL free agency by several NFL writers.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin raved about Cam Newton’s fit in Arizona.

He wrote: “Newton’s chances of landing either a starting job or lucrative backup money went out the window a while ago, but Arizona is among teams that could still stand to upgrade the No. 2 spot. Kyler Murray is unquestionably Kliff Kingsbury’s guy, but his size and style of play, coupled with a late-season injury as a rookie, suggest the Cardinals should consider a better insurance plan than Brett Hundley, especially after spending the offseason restocking for a playoff run. Newton’s dual-threat abilities would be a treat for Kingsbury, and Cam would get a chance to rest up and mentor Murray with an eye on returning to QB1 duties elsewhere in 2021.”

Benjamin also listed the Cardinals signing Cam Newton among his 10 moves that should be made after the NFL draft.

He wrote: “Cardinals sign QB Cam Newton: Jameis Winston settled for a backup gig next season… is it time for Cam to do the same? There may not be a starting job left for Cam but Arizona has room to improve at QB2 and Kyler Murray battled hamstring issues late last year. Newton going to Arizona and potentially getting to work in an offense with DeAndre Hopkins, Larry Fitzgerald and Kenyon Drake doesn’t sound like the worst option.”

NFL Draft Diamonds listed the Arizona Cardinals among five teams that should want Cam Newton.

Damond Talbot explained his reasoning: “The Cardinals need a back-up. I love Drew Anderson and feel he would be a perfect number 3, but at this point Cam would be an upgrade. They re-signed Brett Hundley, but I would take Cam over him every day. You never count on a QB getting hurt but if Murray was to get injured what would they do? They now have some studs like DeAndre Hopkins and you need to make the playoffs. Their fans deserve that, and adding Cam Newton helps.”

Sportscasting.com listed the Cardinals as an “interesting fit” for the quarterback.

Jake Elman wrote: “If Newton is willing to sign a short-term contract with no serious financial risk to teams, he could attract more interest on the open market. Newton would be an intriguing fit with both the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams, two teams with offensive-minded head coaches and a franchise quarterback in place.”
