Border Patrol agents discovered a collapsed tunnel between Mexico and an Arizona border crossing on Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents found the tunnel near a suspicious opening near the Raul Hector Castro Port of Entry, near Douglas, officials said.

Based on assessments, the tunnel extended from Mexico, and nearly 60 yards into the United States, and was adjacent to a sewer line, officials said.

The tunnel showed no signs of recent use and was collapsed about 25 feet from its opening, officials said.

A tunnel like this may have been used to smuggle both people and narcotics into the United States, the agency added.
