Arizona State volleyball rallied from a two-set deficit Sunday to beat Arizona in five sets, ending a 10-match losing streak.

ASU (2-10) lost 3-0 to UA in Tucson on Friday and dropped the first two sets, 28-26, 25-12, at Desert Financial Arena.

Then the Sun Devils regrouped and sustained momentum to win the final three sets, 25-16, 25-22, 15-10. They won a half point in the Territorial Cup Series, which Arizona athletics leads 4.0 points to 3.0.

ASU scored the first three points and never trailed in the fifth set. UA was down 9-8 before a 5-1 Sun Devil run to match point. Roberta Rabelo scored off the Wildcats on second match point.

“I talked to them before the third set and we knew serve and serve receive were important and that it was where we needed to focus,” ASU coach Sanja Tomasevic said. “I asked them to serve a little differently and make them move. I asked them to execute and do what they needed to do on blocking. It was a really cool thing to see that they were able to make that adjustment even though we were down two sets.

“I talked to them before the game about having short term memory loss, forgetting about what happened earlier and moving onto the next play. I really want us to treat every play that way, because if you hold onto anything during the game you are going to get slapped and you don’t want that. We talked a lot about serve and serve receive and in the last three sets we definitely won that battle.”

Marta Leviska had a match-high 16 kills and hit .371 with five total blocks. Iman Isanovic added 15 kills and Rabelo 10. Shannon Shields handled setting for the final four sets, finishing with 33 assists.

“I was so excited,” said Shields, a sophomore transfer from Louisville. “I wanted to go in there and change it up. I wanted to win and I wanted to be really loud, that was one of my goals coming in, and being really good at communicating with the team. I thought I did good in that and it was awesome. It was fun.”

Sofia Maldonado Diaz had 15 kills (.176) and Paige Whipple 14 for Arizona (5-9). The Wildcats hit .259 to ASU’s .216 and had an 18-16 lead in total blocks.

ASU hosts California (1-13) on Friday and March 14. The Sun Devils have eight matches remaining in their all Pac-12 schedule.
