Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers has received a one-year contract extension through the 2023-24 season.

Powers is going into his fifth season as the ASU varsity hockey coach after previously coaching the club team.

ASU was 21-12-1 in 2018-19 and make its first NCAA Tournament appearance. 

Powers was a finalist for the He was a finalist for the 2019 Spencer Penrose Award, given to the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year.

Prior to ASU hockey becoming an NCAA program, Powers led the club team to five consecutive ACHA national appearances and a national title in 2013-14 when Powers ACHA DI national Coach of the Year. 

ASU hockey traveled to China during the summer and won the Renaissance Cup tournament over professional competition. 

The Sun Devils open their 2019-20 season at home against Mercyhurst on Oct. 5. 

ASU is planning to break ground in 2020 on a new hockey/multi-purpose arena adjacent to Wells Fargo Arena.

The projected opening is the 2022-23 hockey season.
