Breaking down Arizona State football’s 2017 schedule

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Rarely over the past three years has Arizona State enjoyed a conference Saturday such as this. A day in which the Sun Devils built an early lead, removing doubt before halftime.

The big news: After consecutive losing seasons, ASU is bowl eligible. On a foggy afternoon at Reser Stadium, the Sun Devils whipped struggling Oregon State 40-24, their first win here since 2005.

“It was really important to get this win, solely for the seniors,” junior quarterback Manny Wilkins said. “They come with a passion every single game, every single day at practice. And personally, I wanted to make sure we got this one and really go get this next one, so we can get a good bowl.”

The effort guaranteed ASU (6-5 and 5-3 in the Pac-12) a wining conference record, something Vice President of Athletics Ray Anderson might consider when determining the fate of coach Todd Graham. ASU has one final regular-season contest to go, next Saturday’s Territorial Cup clash at Sun Devil Stadium.

Graham is under contract for three more seasons, but he might need a win over rival Arizona to save his job. Last season, the Sun Devils were embarrassed 56-35 in Tucson.

“It’s very important for our program,” Graham said of reaching bowl eligibility. “It’s very important for recruiting. Obviously, it’s not our ultimate goal but it’s something that’s very, very important that you do every year. It’s something we had become accustomed to, and our guys were very determined.”

Oregon State dropped to 1-10 and 0-8 in the Pac-12. Considering this was the Beavers’ final home game, ASU coaches expected them to show fight. In front of an announced crowd of 36,063, they were correct. It just took Oregon State three quarters to get around to it.

The Sun Devils jumped to a 30-0, first-half lead. As usual, senior running back Demario Richard picked up the tough yards between the tackles. Wilkins broke loose for a 32-yard run. Sophomore Kyle Williams hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass.

“Our goal was to come out and play fast,” said Richard, who posted his third consecutive 100-yard rushing day. “We had seen on film that they had a hard time with tempo, getting lined up, so we just came out and pushed the tempo and it showed.”

In addition, ASU offensive coordinator Billy Napier went to different players. With standout receiver N’Keal Harry held out of the first quarter (Graham declined to say why), redshirt-freshman Frank Darby caught his first pass since the Sept. 30 Stanford contest. Freshman Curtis Hodges caught his first career touchdown pass and sophomore Terrell Chatman got rare early snaps.

“I knew Frank was going to come in and make plays,” Richard said. “He had a great week of practice this week.”

Overall, ASU totaled 453 yards. Richard rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running back Kalen Ballage added a season-high 103 rushing yards. Wilkins completed 12 of 19 for 167 yards and a touchdown.

“The big message and initiative this week was to really show up and be the team that wanted to play the most,” Napier said. “Start fast. Play with more effort, more toughness.”

Oregon State found a spark in the fourth quarter. With nine minutes to go, Trevorris Johnson scored on a 1-yard run, bringing the Beavers to within 40-17. Oregon State then recovered an onside kick and scored with 7:27 left, cutting the margin to 40-24.

It wasn’t enough.

ASU’s bowl destination may not be known until Dec. 3, but a winning conference record will help. With the Rose Bowl hosting a College Football Playoff game, the Pac-12 champion could play in the Fiesta Bowl. The conference has contracts with six other bowls: the Alamo, Holiday, Foster Farms, Sun, Vegas and Cactus.

The Sun Devils last played in the Cactus Bowl after the 2015 season.

“This is a hard place to get to,” Graham said of the Oregon State win. “It was an hour-and-a-half drive from the airport to Salem. And then it was an hour drive today. It’s just hard to get to. Obviously, we knew how important it was to come in here ready to play. We came out and we were laser focused.”
