News and updates for Arizona State baseball and softball for the week of April 17-23.

This week, ASU baseball hosts Cal State Bakersfield for three games, while the softball team hosts Utah for three.

Arizona State baseball turned a poor start around Friday night for a 12-6 non-conference series-opening win over Cal State Bakersfield at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

ASU (17-19) trailed 5-2 in the third when, after a mound visit by coach Tracy Smith, starting pitcher Chaz Montoya got a ground out to strand three runners.

The Sun Devils batted around in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs to take a 6-5 lead. Carter Aldrete had a two-run double to the left field corner with Zach Cerbo and Hunter Bishop also driving in runs in the frame.

ASU sent nine men to the plate again in the fifth, scoring five runs to lead 11-6. Gage Canning had a two-run triple to help sink reliever Garrett Nimmo (1-4).

Cal State Bakersfield fell to 19-14.

Aldrete had three hits and three RBI. Canning had four hits including back-to-back triples. Taylor Lane had three hits. Montoya (4-2) pitched six innings despite being sick with the flu for the victory.

“I didn’t know until I went up on the mound,” about Montoya being ill, Aldrete said. “He’s like I don’t feel like. I didn’t know what he meant. I thought he meant my arm hurts. Then we get back in the dugout and he’s like I’m going to throw up. Oh, that’s how you felt. He’s got heart, that little guy.”

Game 2 is at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. ASU’s 1967 College World Series championship team will be honored before the game.
