Guests of all ages are invited to play in more than 60 tons of snow and participate in interactive science demonstrations during seven days of frosty scientific fun at Arizona Science Center’s annual Snow Week, Dec. 26 – Jan. 1.
“Snow Week has become a community tradition. We have families that come every year to experience the magic of the winter wonderland in the desert,” says Chevy Humphrey, the Hazel A. Hare President and CEO of the Arizona Science Center.
“Guests get to sled, build snowmen and throw a snowball without ever leaving Phoenix. It is truly one of my favorite weeks at the center.”
A special day is planned for Thursday, Dec. 28, when fans of “Star Trek,” “Star Wars” and “Dr. Who” can celebrate the science of their favorite shows.
From 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. that day, guests can take experience the Empire in the Dorrance Planetarium with a “Star Wars”-themed tour. Learn how to fly a drone with flight drones and experts on site or play laser tag with Stratum Laser Tag. Both activities are offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
At 1 p.m., the center’s Blue Crew will destroy the Death Star with a liquid nitrogen explosion in Heritage and Science Park. The liquid nitrogen explosion will also take place daily during Snow Week using ping-pong balls or soap suds.
“(The nitrogen explosions) are visual with a lot of sound,” Sari Custer, the center’s VP of curiosity, CQ says. “There is always a lot of excitement around them. It’s what the Arizona Science Center is all about, getting to experience something that you can’t at home.”
To round out this special day’s activities, a Chewbacca roar contest will be held at 2 p.m. and a showing of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Irene P. Flinn Giant Screen Theater.
Daily activities during Snow Week include making instant snow or sticky ice, building a gumdrop dome and playing with scented balloons.
In the Genius Theater, explore the mind’s exceptional ability and learn about current research in the field of neuroscience with some surprising applications.
In the Dorrance Planetarium, tour the solar system, explore the Earth’s polar ice caps, discover Arizona’s current night skies and learn about rare types of volcanic eruptions.
On Tuesday, Dec. 26, there will be a showing of “Frozen” in the Irene P. Flinn Giant Screen Theater and characters will be present to sign autographs.
On New Year’s Eve, Subaru will host carpool karaoke. There will be family games like giant Jenga and cornhole. Any Rat Rescue will be on hand with adoptable rodents and a giant balloon drop will take place at 2 p.m.
