Cover 2: Games of the week, AIA title game decision
This can be sliced and diced, debated all year, but it’s fun to do. Especially since Arizona doesn’t have an Open Division for football and no way of letting it play out on the field.
Here is a look at the top 10 high school football teams, regardless of conference. This will be updated each week for the rest of the season, including throughout the playoffs.
Where is your team?
No. 1 Peoria Centennial Coyotes 3-0
The top-ranked team in 5A has outscored its first three opponents 134-0, including a 49-0 win over then No. 2 Goodyear Desert Edge and a 41-0 rout of Glendale Apollo, which just bounced Glendale Deer Valley out of the 5A top 10. But Centennial will get a better gauge on Thursday against QB Spencer Rattler and 6A power Phoenix Pinnacle.
They made history by climbing to No. 1 in 6A for the first time in school history. I was tempted to make them No. 1 here. That’s how impressed I was when I saw them dominated Phoenix Desert Vista 49-17 and the early-season brilliance of QB Brock Purdy.
No. 3 Phoenix Mountain Pointe Pride 2-1
Prevailed by three last week over Chandler, knocking the Wolves off the 6A perch. This is a team that will get stronger as the season progresses and it heals up from some injuries.
The Wolves got banged up badly in the loss to national powerhouse Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy and the overtime win over Pinnacle. If they can stop losing players and heal up, this will be a different animal that nobody will want to deal with in November.
No. 5 Queen Creek Bulldogs 4-0
The signature win over Hamilton three weeks ago and showing it can overcome injuries in the backfield has this 5A team playing with passion and confidence.
No. 6 Pinnacle Pioneers 3-1
This 6A team plays one of the toughest schedules in the state, and so far, is hoping up quite well.
This is the best team right now in 4A, no offense to Saguaro. Coach Dennis Bene has a great line and a dynamic backfield, led by one of the state’s great emerging back, Bijan Robinson.
No. 8 Hamilton Huskies 3-1
Bounced back from the Queen Creek loss by unleashing the dynamic scoring punch of QB Tyler Shough and RB Jawhar Jordan in 52-0 6A routs in successive weeks.
No. 9 Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep Saints 4-0
The one-two running attack of Cole Fisher and Jake Smith strikes with fury and won’t be denied. This team is quite capable of running the 5A table.
No. 10 Scottsdale Saguaro Sabercats 2-2
The back-to-back losses to quality national teams Henderson (Nev.) Liberty and Salt Lake City (Utah) East have them refocused for Arizona teams.
