The rivalry is back and Gilbert Higley is seeking its first varsity football win against Gilbert Williams Field.
Higley coach Eddy Zubey also is looking for his first win against his former Arizona State teammate, Steve Campbell, when the teams meet on Friday night at Williams Field in the final game of the regular season.
Zubey is 0-8 against Campbell. He was Campbell’s defensive coordinator at Tempe McClintock, before Campbell left to start the Williams Field program.
This is the schools’ first meeting since 2015 when they played each other twice.
A breakdown:
Keys on offense
Williams Field has been strong in the ground game this season and figures to pound the ball against Higley, but a big, athletic defensive front will be waiting. In the middle of that line is Ty Robinson, one of the top 2019 recruits in the state, who recently made an official recruiting visit to USC and has another coming up to Oregon. With Robinson attracting double teams on blocks, it has allowed defensive tackle Jackson Solomon and ends Logan Maxwell and Jason Harris to make plays.
Keys on defense
Williams Field’s defense features one of the state’s best secondaries. It will try to slow down Higley’s air attack, led by California commit quarterback Spencer Brasch. Noa Pola-Gates and Tashumbrae “Scooter” Brown are both lockdown corners. Jadon Pearson is an excellent safety.
Prediction: Williams Field 27, Higley 22.
