Goldschmidt ties it up in 4th

Paul Goldschmidt tied the game 1-1 with a massive, 443-foot homer off Dodgers starter Alex Wood in the bottom of the fourth inning. Meanwhile, Arizona starter Zack Greinke has struggled with his control, walking three batters, but he’s been aided by two double plays.

Bellinger gives Dodgers early lead

Arizona native Cody Bellinger gave the Dodgers a 1-0 after hitting a solo home run to right field off of Zack Greinke to start the second inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, J.D. Martinez drilled a double to right center with one out, but was stranded.

Robbie Ray improving

Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray is progressing in his recovery after sustaining a concussion against the St. Louis Cardinals on July 28.

He threw 33 pitches in a bullpen on Wednesday at Chase Field and said that he feels good.

Both Ray and manager Torey Lovullo said they are taking it one day at a time due to the delicate nature of the injury. Ray said it’s just as much mental as it is physical and will be important in coming back.

“Just realizing that guys don’t get hit in the head every day,” Ray said. “It’s kind of a freak accident, there’s not very many cases of guys getting hit in the head. So just understanding that, that it’s not something that (happens twice), knock on wood, it’s like lightning hardly ever strikes twice in the same place.”

Ray said he wants to be 100 percent before he returns, and that he has been cleared by doctors to resume baseball activity.

“(The bullpen) was fantastic,” Lovullo said. “He is giving us open and honest dialogue and being as transparent as possible which I think is extremely important through this process, it’s a very delicate process.”

Lovullo said he strongly feels like Ray should take a rehab start in the minor leagues, but that decision will be made by the front office.

“We don’t quite have a road map because things change day-to-day, but for right now all I know is that he threw a great bullpen, he feels great and we’ll see how he is tomorrow,” Lovullo said. “We’re discussing (a rehab start) right now, we’ve discussed a lot of different scenarios. With that honest feedback, we’re not going to put him in a situation that he’s not prepared or ready for.”

Wednesday’s game

When: 6:40 p.m.

Where: Chase Field

Pitchers: Diamondbacks Diamondbacks RHP Zack Greinke (13-4, 3.10) vs. Dodgers LHP Alex Wood (13-1, 2.33).

TV/Radio: FSAZ/KMVP-FM (98.7), KHOV-FM (105.1)

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better pitching match-up all season.

Greinke was hit hard his last outing, giving up nine hits and six earned runs to the Chicago Cubs in six innings, but at Chase Field he’s 10-0 with a 2.39 ERA and has struck out 95 batters in 79 innings.

Greinke lost his only previous start against L.A. this year when he allowed five runs in five innings way back in April.

Wood has been a revelation for the Dodgers but he’s already pitched 40 more innings than he did all last year and recently complained of some fatigue in his left arm.

Wednesday’s lineup

Arizona: Prepare to root for ‘Hollywood’

Hollywood, the White Shark and La Foca will be suiting up for the Diamondbacks later this month … along with Greinke.

Major League Baseball announced that it will let players wear special uniforms with nicknames of their choice during the Diamondbacks Aug. 25-27 weekend homestand against the Giants.

Some Diamondbacks players embraced the opportunity to inject a little personality into the game, while others, like pitcher Zack Greinke, chose to stick to the script.

Bickley: Bradley speaks for Valley sports fans

Diamondbacks relief pitcher Archie Bradley let loose after the eighth inning of Tuesday’s win over the Dodgers. He told the bipartisan crowd, “This is our house!” It was an awesome moment, almost as good as the sound of Jake Lamb hitting the foul pole for a game-winning grand slam.

It was also a declaration of sorts. While our sports venues have long been a comfortable place for opposing fans, Chase Field is no safe haven for visiting teams, no matter what their record.

Some fear Bradley’s antics may fire up the Dodgers. He’s getting mocked on social media by Los Angeles fans who are telling Bradley to look at the standings.

But Tuesday’s performance was exactly what the Diamondbacks needed, a statement game proving they might be closer to the Dodgers on the field than they are in the standings. And if they can win this series, it will do more than quiet all those opposing fans wearing Dodger blue:

It will give Los Angeles something to think about come October.
