Left-hander Anthony Banda was impressive in earning his first big league victory on Friday night against the San Francisco Giants, but the Diamondbacks haven’t made any assurances about him remaining in their rotation.

Banda was still with the team on Saturday afternoon, but the club is listing Thursday’s starter against the Dodgers at Chase Field as “TBA.” The club will start Zack Godley in Tuesday’s series opener and Zack Greinke in the second game.

Manager Torey Lovullo all but ruled out left-hander Robbie Ray as a possibility for that start – Ray is still working his way back from a concussion sustained when he was hit in the head by a line drive in St. Louis on July 28 – and seemingly the only other viable candidate besides Banda is Taijuan Walker, who is scheduled to start Saturday night.

“He’s going to stay with the team for right now, but we haven’t made any decisions about what the next step will be,” Lovullo said of Banda. “The next couple of days, as we normally do, we’ll develop a strategy and follow the process, and then we’ll get that information to you guys as soon as possible.”

Banda has never faced the Dodgers, but Walker has started twice against them this season, giving up a combined five runs in 10 2/3 innings. The Dodgers’ lineup has been equally effective regardless of handedness, ranking third in the league in OPS against both lefties and righties.

Memorable moment

During a break early in Friday’s game, Diamondbacks outfielder Gregor Blanco was shown on the AT&T Park video board with the caption, “Forever Giant,” and received a warm ovation from the crowd.

“I wasn’t expecting that,” Blanco said. “They told me they were going to do something, but that was pretty cool. Especially the fans getting up and cheering for me, I think it was a great moment. Even my old teammates, from the field were saying hi to me.”

Blanco spent five seasons with the Giants and helped them win two World Series titles. He said the fans haven’t forgotten him. He was approached by several people while he was out shopping on Friday.

“A lot of people said, ‘Hey we miss you, welcome to the city, welcome home,’ stuff like that,” he said. “It’s nice that people still remember me.”

Short hops

  • Lovullo said he continues to hear positive things about Ray’s recovery, but called it “not very likely” that he would return to the rotation during the upcoming Dodgers series. Ray has yet to throw off the mound since the head injury.
  • Shortstop Nick Ahmed has been doing hand strengthening exercises as he recovers from hand surgery, but he has yet to pick up a bat, which Lovullo said is the next step in his rehab process.
  • Lovullo gave a big hug to Pablo Sandoval prior to Saturday’s game. Sandoval, who was called up by the Giants on Saturday, was released last month by the Boston Red Sox after parts of three disappointing, injury-plagued seasons. Lovullo was the bench coach with the Red Sox during two of those seasons. “It’s unfortunate that it didn’t work out as good as it possibly could have (in Boston),” Lovullo said. “I don’t know why it didn’t work out. I just know he’s happy to be here.”
  • Sandoval took the place of first baseman Brandon Belt, who was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list on Saturday, a day after he was hit in the head by an errant breaking ball thrown by Banda. On Friday night, Banda said the pitch was an accident and wished Belt a speedy recovery.
