Ray, D-Backs cruising vs. Reds
Behind a six-run fifth inning and what has been a strong outing from Robbie Ray, the Diamondbacks took a commanding 8-2 lead into the late innings on Tuesday night at Great American Ball Park.
Paul Goldschmidt has reached base each of the four times he’s come to the plate with one double and three walks; David Peralta had a pair of hits; and Chris Herrmann had a two-run home run.
The Diamondbacks sent nine to the plate in the fifth, scoring six times to snap a 2-2 tie. Herrmann’s opposite-field homer capped the scoring.
Ray, meanwhile, gave up a solo homer in the first to Zack Cozart and had to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the third, in which he allowed just one run, and has otherwise had little trouble against the Reds in his first start of the season’s second half.
Lovullo: Delgado has flexor tendon strain
Reliever Randall Delgado has a strained flexor tendon in his right arm, manager Torey Lovullo said, adding that his versatile right-hander will not play catch for between 10 days and two weeks.
Lovullo wouldn’t offer much more in terms of a timetable for a return, but it seems likely the Diamondbacks will be without Delgado for perhaps a month, if not longer.
Flexor tendon strains can often be precursors to or happen in conjunction with more serious injuries – Diamondbacks right-hander Shelby Miller strained his flexor at the same time he tore his ulnar collateral ligament – but Lovullo seemed to rule that out.
“I don’t know much beyond it’s a mild flexor strain,” Lovullo said. “I think the ligament is fine.”
Delgado reported discomfort in his elbow on Sunday, a day giving up four runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Braves. He underwent an MRI on Monday.
With him down, the Diamondbacks will be without a pitcher they relied on in various roles for the season’s first 3 1/2 months, often asking him to soak up multiple innings in relief appearances. He also made five starts, pitching effectively in all but one.
“For right now, we like the balance of our bullpen with the four righties and three lefties,” Lovullo said. “We have a couple of guys who can give us multiple innings. I think T.J. McFarland will take a little bit of that role if we need some length.”
Delgado was replaced on the roster by right-hander J.J. Hoover, who broke into the majors with the Reds and spent five seasons here.
“He was one of our most productive relievers for most of the first half. He had a little rut, as all players do,” Lovullo said. “I know he was struggling with some shoulder fatigue. He got that under control and I think he’s in a good place right now.”
Catching up with the Cincinnati Reds
The Reds entered Monday’s series finale against the Nationals looking to avoid a four-game sweep but came up short, falling 6-1 to Washington.
It’s been a rough start to the second half after they went into the All-Star break on a positive note, taking two of three from the Diamondbacks at the end of a stretch in which they won nine of 15 games.
- The Reds’ pitching remains inconsistent. RHP Homer Bailey and RHP Tim Adleman each had poor outings against the Nationals.
- The Reds’ offense ranks seventh in the NL with 4.78 runs per game and is tied for fourth with a .772 OPS. Their pitching has not been as good.
- The Reds have the league’s worst ERA at 5.21; the rotation ERA is 6.04, nearly a run worse than the next-closest team.
When: 4:10 p.m.
Where: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati.
Pitchers: Diamondbacks LHP Robbie Ray (8-4, 2.97) vs. Reds RHP Sal Romano (1-1, 4.50).
TV/Radio: FSAZ/KTAR-AM (620), KHOV-FM (105.1).
Ray will be making his first start of the second half after he went to his first All-Star game last week. He did not, however, appear in the game on Tuesday in Miami. … Ray has excellent numbers on the road, with a 1.34 ERA in eight starts. … He faced the Reds once last season, giving up six runs (three earned) in five innings, with one walk and 10 strikeouts. … Romano will be making the third start of his big league career. A 23rd-round pick in 2011, he has worked his way up the Reds’ ladder. He ranked as their eighth-best prospect entering this season. … Romano had a 3.47 ERA in 10 starts in Triple-A Louisville. … He debuted on April 16, giving up three runs (two earned) in three innings against the Brewers, then was sent back to the minors until returning on July 6, when he gave up two runs in five innings against the Rockies.
