CINCINNATI – With the trade deadline still nearly two weeks away, the Diamondbacks struck early on Tuesday afternoon, acquiring outfielder J.D. Martinez from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for three infield prospects, a move that gives them another potent bat in a lineup that already rates among the best in baseball.

Martinez, 29, might have been the best rental bat available on the trade market, and he should give the Diamondbacks a major boost as they try to lock down a playoff spot over the season’s final 2 1/2 months.

After missing the first six weeks of the season with a foot injury, Martinez has hit .305/.388/.630 with 16 home runs in 200 at-bats. He’ll fit somewhere in the middle of a lineup that includes sluggers Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb and David Peralta, and, perhaps most important, Martinez will represent a potent weapon against left-handed pitching, which has stymied the Diamondbacks all season.

“I think anytime that you have the ability to acquire a bat that fits in the middle of your lineup you want to take that opportunity, given where we are and how the season has gone to date,” Diamondbacks General Manager Mike Hazen said. “He has performed on many different levels, in the postseason, with good teams in Detroit, and we felt like his presence in the lineup and certainly his ability to hit both sides, to be a good corner outfielder, we felt like it was a good fit for us given where we currently stand.”

Hazen said he is hoping Martinez will be able to join the Diamondbacks here on Wednesday.

In exchange, the Diamondbacks parted with a trio of infield prospects: third baseman/shortstop Dawel Lugo, shortstop Sergio Alcantara and second baseman Jose King. Lugo, 22, is most accomplished. He entered the year as the club’s No. 2 prospect according to Baseball America and was hitting .282/.325/.428 for Double-A Jackson.

Alcantara is regarded as a tremendous defensive shortstop, and, though he has progressed, is considered a light hitter. King, 18, was with the club’s rookie-level Arizona League affiliate.

Martinez struggled to establish himself for parts of three seasons with the Houston Astros before getting cut loose and signing with the Tigers in 2014. He immediately took off after that, developing into one of the more feared hitters in the American League.

MOORE: J.D. Martinez trade a statement move by D-Backs GM Mike Hazen

Over the past four seasons, he has hit .300/.361/.551 in nearly 1,700 at-bats. His numbers, with that .300 average, come out to 36 homers and 101 RBIs over 162 games.

With left fielder Yasmany Tomas down with a groin injury, the Diamondbacks were without a run-producing bat they were counting on for the middle of their lineup. Hazen said it was a factor in making the move, noting also the absence of shortstop Nick Ahmed, who is out with a broken hand.

“It was a slow-developing situation where we didn’t really have a great timeframe on (their) returns,” Hazen said. “Once you get beyond the next two weeks, you sort of run out of options.”

In terms of what they gave up in middle-infield prospects, Hazen said he was dealing from a position of relative depth in the organization.

“As our farm system is currently constructed and how we project it moving forward,” he said, “we felt like we had some protection there in those spots. … Look, I think we gave up quality players but we got a quality player in return.”

The Diamondbacks entered Tuesday night riding their first five-game losing streak of the season. They were swept over the weekend in Atlanta, the second time in the past three series they’d been swept, and had lost 11 of the past 14 overall.

On Sunday, they were shut down by the Braves’ Jaime Garcia, the fourth consecutive start against a left-handed pitcher in which they looked almost entirely overmatched. Martinez, who is hitting a blistering .474 with six homers against left-handers, seems certain to help, though Hazen cautioned that it wasn’t the driving factor in the deal.

“He has done a very good job against left-handed pitching,” Hazen said. “He’ll strengthen our lineup against lefties, but I think he’ll strengthen our lineup against right-handed pitching, as well.”

Martinez is set to hit free agency at the end of the year, and is likely to command an enormous contract. The Diamondbacks will be on the hook for the remainder of his $11.75 million salary, which works out to about $5.1 million.

“We’re very fortunate to have an owner that really wants to win as much as Ken (Kendrick) does,” Hazen said. “He’s very supportive through this process to allow us to go out and be aggressive on the market.”
