Padres right-hander Jhoulys Chacin was almost unhittable when he faced the Diamondbacks for the first time this season.

But that wasn’t the case in Round 2.

Less than a week after getting shut out by Chacin and the Padres in San Diego, the Diamondbacks were much better in their second look – cranking out 10 total hits, including a grand slam from shortstop Chris Owings, en route to a 7-6 win Monday at Chase Field.

“Give our hitters some credit,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “They understood how Chacin was going to work. They waited him out and hit some quality pitches. Our guys deserve some credit. I think they were ready for that moment.”

Arizona managed just three hits when the two clubs squared off last Wednesday, losing 1-0, but the team solved Chacin early this go-around.

BOX SCORE: Diamondbacks 7, Padres 6

Right fielder David Peralta homered in the first inning, a slim lead that held until the fourth when left fielder Yasmany Tomas chipped in an RBI double to put the Diamondbacks ahead 2-0.

Then in the fifth, they tacked on four more – all with two outs.

Right-hander Zack Greinke got the rally started with his first hit of the season, a single to right, before center fielder A.J. Pollock walked.

“Just put it in a nice location,” Greinke said, “just far enough away from the outfielders.”

After that, Peralta singled to load the bases and Owings cleared them with his first career grand slam.

“Felt good,” Owings said. “Just great at-bats to even get to me. Greinke with a nice two-out knock there, and A.J. threw a good at-bat together and then Peralta lining that ball to left. Just to get up in that inning was awesome, and we needed it.”

Owings hit third Monday with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt grabbing some rest and not starting for the first time this season; it was just the third time in his career Owings hit third – and first since Sept. 11, 2014, against the Giants – as he went 2-for-4.

“It probably won’t happen too many more times,” Owings said. “So just enjoy it while you can.”

Chacin gave up one more run, in the sixth, when first baseman Chris Herrmann singled in Tomas to put the Diamondbacks up 7-1, and his night was done after the inning.

Despite the outburst, the Padres still called for a photo finish.

Greinke was steady, giving up that lone run through six innings and fanning 11 for his second 10-plus strikeout game with Arizona, but the Diamondbacks’ cushion shrunk after he left with the Padres scoring four runs in the seventh – which included a three-run homer by first baseman Wil Myers.

In the eighth, the Padres moved within 1 when catcher Austin Hedges smacked a home run to left-center off lefty Jorge De La Rosa.

But that’s as close as San Diego would get with Diamondbacks closer Fernando Rodney coming retiring the side in the ninth to improve to 6-for-6 in save chances this season.

“Another good win,” Owings said. “Good to come out on top.”
