A day after filling a key hole behind the bench, the Coyotes addressed a vacancy in their front office Wednesday by hiring former Arizona State Athletic Director Steve Patterson as their president and CEO.

The Coyotes had been in need of a new president/CEO since Anthony LeBlanc vacated the position June 16 after owner Andrew Barroway bought out his minority partners.

General Manager John Chayka has also been promoted to president of hockey operations.

“I’m extremely honored to join the Arizona Coyotes organization,” Patterson said in a statement released by the team. “My wife and I loved living in the Valley of the Sun and we are so excited to return to Arizona. The Valley is a great hockey market with an incredibly loyal and passionate fan base. I’m looking forward to working with Mr. Barroway to create a successful franchise on and off the ice and I’m very excited about the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Patterson, 59, started with ASU’s athletic department in July 2011 as chief operating officer and managing director of Sun Devil Sports Group. He was named athletic director in March 2012 and held that post until he left to become the University of Texas athletic director in November 2013. He lasted less than two years with the Longhorns after a tumultuous tenure at his alma mater.

Earlier in his career, Patterson spent nearly 25 years as an executive with the NFL’s Houston Texans and the NBA’s Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers. He was general manager of the Rockets when they were NBA champions in 1994 and also helped bring the Texans and Super Bowl XXXVIII to Houston.

With the Trail Blazers, Patterson served as president and was also the team’s general manager briefly. In 2007, he launched his own business Pro Sports Consulting.

Patterson also has experience in hockey, having worked with the Houston Aeros.

“We are very pleased to name Steve as our new President and CEO,” Barroway said in a statement released by the team. “Steve has a wealth of experience and has served as an innovative and successful executive in the NFL, NBA, professional hockey, professional baseball and college athletics for over 30 years. He’s built championship teams and organizations and has managed stadiums, ballparks and arenas across the United States. Most importantly, he previously worked in our market and has the necessary corporate and political relationships to help us secure a long-term home for the Coyotes in the Valley. We’re thrilled to have him join us.”

Patterson received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas in 1980. He graduated from Texas’ law school in 1984.
