DETROIT – The Cardinals led the Lions 10-0 after the first quarter on Sunday, and both teams acknowledged the lead easily could have been larger.

The Cardinals were stopped twice inside the red zone early in the game. Coach Bruce Arians called it a key time in the game, and Lions coach Jim Caldwell realized his team could have been in deep trouble.

“Typically in a game like that, you end up being 21-0 or 28-0 very easily,” Caldwell said. “And what our defense did, the way they hung in there, they did not flinch. They did a great job I think of holding them, making them work for every inch.”

Part of the Lions’ game plan obviously centered on controlling Cardinals running back David Johnson, and they accomplished that as well as anyone did in the 2016 season.

Johnson left the game against the Lions with a wrist injury late in the third quarter. He rushed for 23 yards on 11 attempts (2.1 yard average) and caught six passes for 68 yards. Johnson was held to less rushing yardage only once last year. He had six rushing yards in the the final game of the year but left early with a knee injury.

“We knew he was huge target for them, big part of the offense, so we just wanted to make sure we knew where he was at all times and make sure we put bodies on him,” safety Glover Quin said. “Hit him, hit him, hit him, continue to hit him and see if he can take it for four quarters, and we were able to get him out of the game, and that’s a big part of the offense.”

The fateful fourth

The Cardinals defense dominated the Lions through three quarters, limiting their offense to 216 yards and 15 points.

The fourth quarter, however, was disastrous. The Lions gained 204 yards, and quarterback Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians thought the defense wore down from being on the field too much.

Cornerback Justin Bethel took a share of the blame. He played well through three quarters, returning an interception for a touchdown and breaking up touchdown and conversion pass attempts.

He didn’t fare as well in the fourth quarter, giving up two touchdown passes.

“I think we did a lot of good things in the first three quarters,” he said. “At the end there, the last two series, we just couldn’t keep them out of the end zone. Me personally, I know I gave up in those last two series, there were three plays that I know. I definitely think we showed some really good things out there. I think we just didn’t finish how we should’ve.”

Safety Tyrann Mathieu agreed that the defense played well for three quarters.

“I mean, it’s hard to stop any team in the National Football League when they’re getting the ball at the 50-yard line and the 40-yard line,” he said. “So, I thought we fought well defensively. Obviously, there are some plays that we would probably want back.”

Footwork

Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer struggled with accuracy, especially early. Both he Arians blamed it on poor footwork.

“He was hurrying everything,” Arians said. “It was footwork, reading things too fast, and then just accuracy killed him. His velocity was great, but his accuracy.”

Palmer completed 27 of 48 passes (56.3 percent) for the game, but was just 10 of 24 (41.7 percent) in the first half.

“I don’t think I got in rhythm with my feet,” Palmer said. “But really looking forward to looking at this film because I want to improve from it and move past it.”
