Camp confidential: Saturday’s annual “Red & White” practice wasn’t anything like it used to be years ago when the team made it more of an all-out scrimmage with tackling and the occasional fisticuffs. In recent years, it’s been more like a glorified practice and this year was more of the same. Coach Steve Wilks warned beforehand that it would look like most practices so far in camp and he was right. “I don’t want to go beyond and get the players trying to do a little bit more than they normally would do,” he said. “I want them concentrating and focusing on the things we’ve been talking about all along. But I think it will be an intense practice and the fans will get a lot out of it.” … In the early portion of practice, K Phil Dawson made all six of his field-goal attempts, including his last one from 55 yards. Rookie K Matt McCrane was 4 for 4. … After a full week of camp, Wilks said he still wasn’t quite ready to start any game-planning for Saturday’s preseason opener at home against the Chargers. “We’re still in training-camp mode,” he said. “We’re still going over installs on certain things for the third time. Next week we’ll start honing in on the Chargers and getting ready for those guys, but I want to keep the focus on us, keep talking about the details and the fundamentals.” Rookie RB Chase Edmonds has been impressive since the start of camp and Wilks has called him a “solid three-down back.”

Injury report: C A.Q. Shipley suffered a leg injury during Saturday’s practice, and although he walked off the field, he wound up being taken in a cart to the trainer’s room. His status likely won’t be known until Monday when Wilks is next scheduled to meet with reporters. LB Deone Bucannon (knee) is day-to-day. An MRI revealed no structural damage after his knee slammed against the helmet of WR Brice Butler on Thursday.

Quote: “Budda has the most hats. I call him my ‘little Jamaican.’ He has the most jobs. He has a lot of jobs. He’s a hard worker and he’s an interesting guy because he’s able to retain a lot of information, which is something I realized dealing with the young man this spring.” – Cardinals secondary coach Dave Merritt on defensive back Budda Baker.
