The Cardinals are at a crossroads. They have a diminished offense. They haven’t played a home game in a month. They haven’t been better than .500 since 2015. They need more than a victory on Monday Night Football.

They need a total makeover.

They need to win a championship with their defense.

This paradigm shift isn’t a preference. It’s a necessity. While the Cardinals’ offense has been a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces, their defense is showing encouraging signs of growth.

Two rookies – Haason Reddick and Budda Baker – are providing immediate dividends. Karlos Dansby is an ageless wonder, with foot speed to match his leadership skills. The secondary is no longer a soft spot, a back end with more weapons than weaknesses. The impending return of Deone Bucannon could put this unit over the top.

The theory will be put under a microscope in Arizona’s home opener, after the Cowboys’ dynamic offense was frustrated and exposed by the smothering Broncos. Ezekiel Elliott rushed for eight yards, reduced to a quitter in the game’s defining moment. Dak Prescott threw two interceptions, raising concerns that he is more of a game manager than impact quarterback. The outcome humbled Cowboys fans who assumed the glory years had returned.

If the Cardinals can match the Broncos, resembling the NFL’s gold standard of impact defenses, a new path to the Super Bowl will be illuminated.

SCOUTING REPORT: Who has the advantage on Monday Night Football?

This doesn’t require much change in strategy. Head coach Bruce Arians will have to table his stubbornness and learn to defer after winning a coin toss, allowing his defense to set the tone and establish field position. Quarterback Carson Palmer will have to control his big-play impulses, limiting turnovers and risky pass attempts. Larry Fitzgerald must shine as a possession receiver, providing the small bursts of offense that are missing without the injured David Johnson.

Such concessions won’t be easy for an offense that once lit up the NFL. It won’t come naturally for a head coach who delights in prodigious offensive output.

The problem isn’t Palmer, who remains one of the more polarizing players in the NFL. He was roundly criticized after an overtime victory in Indianapolis, a viewpoint that began with Arians’ harsh halftime assessment, even though he later walked back some of his comments.

Yet many fans and experts believe Palmer has passed his prime, a shell of the quarterback who performed at an MVP level just two years ago. Others believe his retirement deliberations in the offseason reflect a player who has already checked out.

That’s nonsense. Palmer remains deeply invested in this team and his responsibilities as a leader. Statistics proved that Palmer was exceptional against the Colts when not under duress. Despite the ragged edges, he authored a fourth-quarter comeback that is not receiving the respect it deserves.

The issue is mostly an offensive line in shambles. Palmer’s game-breaking receivers can’t stay healthy. And while the impressive return of Chris Johnson should be a harbinger of hope, he won’t scare opposing defenses like David Johnson did in 2016.

In the end, the cure for Arizona’s ailing offense won’t come from the offense. It will spawn from a defense that might have the fire and the fangs, able to shorten the field and intimidate the opponent, It could alleviate pressure on an offense that captured the imagination in 2015, producing 33 or more points in eight of 16 games.

That’s not going to happen in 2017. But it doesn’t mean the season can’t end up with a title-game appearance in Minnesota.

The Broncos won a Super Bowl with an aging quarterback who could barely throw the ball. The Seahawks made successive Super Bowl appearances with a defense built on swagger, intelligence and extreme physicality. Over the past 20 years, only three teams have won the big game with defenses that ranked lower than 20th in points and yards allowed: the 2011 Giants, the 2009 Saints and the 2006 Colts.

Many Valley fans have compared Palmer’s Cardinals with Steve Nash’s Suns, an offensive juggernaut that was entertaining and successful. But the reason the Warriors won an NBA championship where the Suns failed is because Golden State learned how to play defense.

The Cardinals must do the same. Their defense was overrated in the past two seasons, paper tigers that struck fear in nobody, a unit that looked better on the field than it did on any given Sunday.

This year, they must lead the way. And then some.
