Coach of the Year

Jason Mohns, Scottsdale Saguaro

Mohns put Saguaro in the state record books, leading the Sabercats to a fifth consecutive state championship. No school in the history of the Arizona Interscholastic Association has ever done that. During this run, Saguaro has won 35 games in a row against Arizona opponents. After a 1-2 start, losing to two out-of-state teams, Saguaro regrouped and ran off 11 consecutive wins, as a mostly new offensive line jelled and the offense reinvented itself as more of a passing threat with senior QB Max Massingale passing for more than 3,000 yards and receivers Zach Wilson and Logan Pettijohn each having more than 1,000 receiving yards.

Also considered for Coach of the Year

Sean Hinton, Thatcher

Led Thatcher to back-to-back state championships for the first time since he was a player there in 2000 and ’01, handing Eloy Santa Cruz its only loss for the second time in two years in the playoffs, both in overtime, both by a point, this time in the 2A state championship game.

Spencer Stowers, Queen Creek Casteel

Led a school in only its second year of varsity action without any seniors to the 3A state championship, going 14-0, the only team in Arizona to go undefeated this football season.
