Chandler junior quarterback Jacob Conover wasn’t going to attend Alabama’s camp on Monday — until he got called a second time.
After Alabama reached out again while Chandler was in Snowflake last week during team camp, his dad, Jeff, figured a way to get his son on a flight Sunday to Tuscaloosa.
They were able to catch “standby” flights.
“It was the second time they called, so we said, ‘Maybe we should take the trip,’ ” Jacob said.
There were about 500 kids at the camp.

Of the six or so quarterbacks throwing in a small group, Conover was kept back to throw to the Alabama coaches by himself, giving head coach Nick Saban an up-close look.
After the private workout, Conover said he hung out with the Alabama assistant coaches, before being called into Saban’s office, where he was offered a scholarship, Jeff Conver said.
“It was really cool,” Jacob Conover said. “He’s a great coach, full of wisdom and knowledge. There is a sense of home when you talk to him.”
Conover, who passed for 3,000 yards leading the Wolves to the 6A title last season, then went on a tour of the campus and met with academic advisers.
Conover has much to consider before he graduates from college in 2019.
He said he still wants to go on a two-year church mission, but it will come down to the right timing.
The Alabama offer has him thinking even more.
“It’s a lot to think about,” Conover said. “Recruiting is a long process. I’m not in a rush to make a decision yet.”
Conover is the third Arizona high school quarterback since the spring offered by Alabama. Chandler Hamilton senior QB Tyler Shough committed to North Carolina.
Phoenix Pinnacle junior QB Spencer Rattler committed to Oklahoma.
