Danny White paced the sideline at Camp Tontozona, a stack of notes in his left hand.

The former Arizona State and Dallas Cowboys quarterback was hired by coach Todd Graham as a consultant for this season. The program legend certainly has plenty of knowledge to share. However, there’s one catch: White isn’t allowed to directly coach players.

“It’s been frustrating, it really has,” White said. “I want so badly to be able to talk directly to the quarterbacks and to the receivers, and actually coach, but i just have to stand back there and bite my tongue.”

Instead, he writes out notes and passes them along to the coaching staff. Something that he says has been going very well.

“The coaches have been really good about taking advice,” White said. “There hasn’t been an ego issue or problem whatsoever and I write something down and it gets put in. That’s been really gratifying.”

“Danny’s been awesome,” Graham said. “Obviously he’s a great person, a great mentor, he just has great insight. He gives me notes every day. He’s been away from the game, but football is football. Everything from cadence, to talking to me about little things with the quarterbacks. Having those consultants has been really big. It’s been very productive.”

White led the Sun Devils to a 32-4 record from 1971-73, as both the quarterback and punter. He was an All-American his final season before being drafted in the third round by the Cowboys.

White says he’s enjoyed being back at Camp Tontozona, and that it’s brought back some old memories.

“The first night was a little weird to be honest with you, just being up here,” White said. “I was having some serious déjà vu the first day. Camp T is all about bonding and when you go through difficult things together, it has a way of bringing you closer.”

He’s confident in this year’s group of quarterbacks, saying he feels Blake Barnett, Manny Wilkins and Brady White are all impressive and can win games. He said the quarterback position won’t be the reason ASU loses games this season.

Being new to the team this season, Danny White has had to learn the system just as any freshman or incoming player would. It’s also offensive coordinator Billy Napier’s first season with the Sun Devils, adding in more of a learning curve to the offense.

“I’m about halfway there, which gives me so much more respect for Manny, because this is the third time he’s had to go through this,” White said of ASU’s third OC in as many years. “It’s so much easier that second and third year, I’ve never been through anything like this. I had three years here and 13 with the Cowboys so I don’t know what it’s like going to a new team and having to learn a new system except for my rookie year.”

Graham will be under pressure to win this season after finishing last year 5-7. White knows he can provide real value to the coaching staff, and believes that this team will rebound from what he called a disappointing season last year.

“I’m another set of eyes,” White said. “There’s no way that one coach can watch 10 guys or 20 guys or 105 guys. There’s just no way, so the more eyes you have that know what to look for and what to expect the better, hopefully I’m providing that. I’m seeing things with my coaching and playing experience that other guys wouldn’t know to look for.”

White said he expects to be opposite of wherever Napier is for games. If Napier is in the booth, White will be on the field and vice versa. White will miss the first game of the season due to prior obligations as the Dallas Cowboys color analyst for Compass Media Networks radio. On Thursday, Aug. 31, the Cowboys close out their NFL preseason at the Houston Texans while ASU opens its season hosting New Mexico State.

He said he is upset to be missing out on the opener and will be rushing back to watch film and help prepare for the next game. He thinks this can be a special year for the Sun Devils and is excited to be a part of it.

“It’s a great opportunity,” White said. “It’s hard to explain, it’s something to keep me involved with the program and busy and doing things which is real important to me right now. I’m grateful to Coach Graham for the opportunity to just be out here and to have some input. The Sun Devils are my family, and it’s been a real blessing.”
