Yeah, it’s early and plenty of moves will still be made, but NFL free agency grades are starting to come out and we were curious to see what marks the Arizona Cardinals received.
How do writers feel about the Cardinals’ moves so far?
Judging by their recent grades, most think the Cardinals have done alright.
Here’s what they’re saying about the team’s moves.
ARIZONA NFL CONNECTIONS: Where are they now?
ESPN.com: Cardinals get a B
It writes: “The Cardinals have signed four free agents and re-signed three of their own, but no move was bigger than the signing of a 42-year-old kicker.”
walterfootball.com: Cardinals get a B for Karlos Dansby signing
It writes: “Someone, at some point, said that you can never go home again. Karlos Dansby apparently doesn’t believe in such nonsense because he has returned to Arizona for the third time in his career.”
Pete Prisco writes: “The Cardinals locked up pass rusher Chandler Jones to a long-term deal, which was a smart move. But they also suffered some hits, losing defensive end Calais Campbell (Jaguars) and safeties Tony Jefferson (Ravens) and D.J. Swearinger (Redskins). They replaced Jefferson with veteran Antione Bethea, who might be a stopgap for a year or two. They also re-signed center A.Q. Shipley and added kicker Phil Dawson. They suffered a lot of hits that might be tough to overcome.”

SB Nation: Cardinals get a B for Antoine Bethea signing
Ryan Van Bibber writes: “At 32, it’s legit to wonder if he can be effective, but going from the dumpster fire in San Francisco to talented outfit like this could be just what he needs. He replaces Tony Jefferson.”
Sam Monson writes: “Karlos Dansby’s career is definitely in its twilight, but he is still playing at the level of a capable starter at linebacker, and is a player that can help improve the performance of those around him by understanding where everybody needs to be and getting everybody organized. His third stint in Arizona may be the final year of his career, but it’s likely a solid move.”
Randy Gurzi writes: “Keeping their best pass rusher in outside linebacker Chandler Jones was huge and, although defensive end Calais Campbell has been a good player for years, the Arizona Cardinals did the right thing letting him walk. He will be 31 years old soon and winning teams don’t pay guys that age huge deals—the Jacksonville Jaguars do that. Overall, their arrivals are dwarfed by their departures and there will be some work to do in the draft. At least they haven’t reached for anyone though.”
