Streets were flooded throughout Apache Junction, the San Tan Valley area and parts of the West Valley Monday morning as an evening rainstorm with a second act dumped even more rain in metro Phoenix.

Washes were overflowing and authorities were reporting flooded roads in Apache Junction, Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Mesa, Gilbert, Avondale, Laveen, south Phoenix, Buckeye, Litchfield Park, Goodyear and Ahwatukee.

Heavy rain and localized street flooding were expected to continue until the noon hour.

Flash-flood warnings were in effect for Apache Junction, the San Tan Valley area, Gold Canyon, Avondale, Goodyear and Buckeye, according to the National Weather Service.

Flooding appeared especially severe in Apache Junction.

A driver in a white Ford sedan was trapped just after 9 a.m. in rising waters near 16th Avenue and Saguaro Drive, just west of Ironwood Drive.

Fire crews safely rescued a high school girl who appeared to be on her way to school.

According to Jaret Rogers, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Phoenix, heavy rain produced nearly 2 inches of rain in an hour this morning in the far East Valley.

“We expect rainfall to be persistent into the later afternoon,” Rogers said, adding the weather service expects the rain to diminish after that, with some light, scattered showers in the evening.

By 8 a.m., areas in far northeast Mesa near Thunder Mountain received nearly 3½ inches of rain in the past 24 hours, according to the Maricopa County Flood Control District.

The heaviest rainfall fell in Valley areas outside the Loop 101. Areas within generally saw light, scattered showers overnight, with many areas of Phoenix and Glendale reporting little to no rain.

Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport reported just over an inch of rain. Most of the far West and East Valley saw more than an inch of rain or more. North and south portions of the Valley generally saw just under an inch of rainfall.
