CINCINNATI – In the visitors’ clubhouse minutes before the game, the Diamondbacks got word their front office had acquired perhaps the best slugger available on the trade market, landing J.D. Martinez in a deal with the Detroit Tigers.

They then proceeded to wallop the Cincinnati Reds 11-2, watching their offense break out for the first time in weeks to help snap a five-game losing streak. Third baseman Jake Lamb, tongue firmly planted in his cheek, declared it the beginning of the J.D. Martinez Era.

“He’s already contributing to the team,” Lamb joked.

In all seriousness, Lamb’s reaction mirrored that of his teammates. The Diamondbacks were a good team before the deal went down. They feel they’re an even better one now.

“I’m pretty amped up,” Lamb said. “Obviously, that’s an unbelievable bat. We already have a great lineup, but it’s just another threat. A guy with power, hits for average – just a huge threat to an already pretty-stacked lineup.”

In recent weeks, the Diamondbacks had not looked like a potent bunch. They had essentially stopped hitting with men in scoring position. They were seemingly unable to do damage against left-handed pitching. They were in a funk and they couldn’t seem to find their way out.

That changed, however, on Tuesday night against the Reds, owners of the worst pitching staff in baseball. The Diamondbacks broke through in record fashion. Never before had a Diamondbacks team collected six extra-base hits in a single inning like they did in the fifth. And never had nine different Diamondbacks hitters contributed extra-base hits.

Their six-run fifth was the most runs they’d scored in an inning in nearly a month. They sent nine batters to the plate in a frame capped by Chris Herrmann’s two-run, opposite-field home run.

In the previous 14 games, the Diamondbacks had hit just .179 with men in scoring position. They went 6 for 12 in those spots on Tuesday night, including 4 for 5 in the fifth inning alone.

If it felt like it’d been a while since that version of the Diamondbacks offense showed up, that’s because it had.

“It sure has, man,” Herrmann said. “We were scuffling for five games in a row that we lost. We were kind of hanging our heads pretty low. But we’re a good team. We’re going to bounce back from failure and losses and stuff. We have great chemistry. We all want to win here. …

“That’s the way we remember how to play baseball right there.”

Left-hander Robbie Ray, making his first start after an 11-day layoff, threw well, limiting the Reds to two runs in six innings. He limited the Reds to just one run in the fourth, working out of a second-and-third, one-out jam, and mostly cruised through the rest of his outing.

On Wednesday night, the Diamondbacks will have Zack Greinke on the mound and, for the first time, they could have Martinez in their lineup. That’s the same Martinez who hit .305 with a .388 on-base, .630 slugging and 16 homers in 200 at-bats for the Tigers this season prior to the trade.

Hours before news of the trade broke, players talked quietly in the clubhouse before the game of the possibility of a Martinez deal. They couldn’t have been happier when it actually came to fruition.

“If people don’t know what he’s done, they need to look it up,” Diamondbacks reliever Archie Bradley said. “I was just thinking about it today: (Paul Goldschmidt), Lamb, J.D. Martinez. Just the heart of the order. Not to leave out C.O. (Chris Owings) and those guys, but when you talk about working through a lineup and now you’ve got him in it, it’s exciting. You’ve got an All-Star type guy, a Silver Slugger. It makes our lineup a lot scarier.”
