Twin brothers Trenton and Tyson Givens of Valley Vista dreamt of this day, crossing the finish line 1 and 2, hugging each other afterwards, both celebrating the moment at the state high school track and field championships.
Trenton was first at 13.95 seconds in the Division I 110-meter high hurdles Saturday on a hot day at Phoenix Desert Vista with his brother Tyson right next to him finishing second at 13.99.
“It was crazy,” Trenton said. “We were working so hard and to finish up our senior year like this, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
Tyson interrupted, “This is the best-case scenario.”
They teamed up in the 4×100 relay and helped Valley Vista finish second to state champion Chandler at 41.80 second. Chandler won at 41.63 with Tyson Tippett, Jamere Haskell, Andereya Nsubuga and anchor and Iowa State football signee Eli Sanders.
Trenton was third (38.21 and Tyson fourth (38.71) in the 300 hurdles. That state title was won by Yan Vazquez of Mesa Red Mountain at 36.68 with Brayden Dahl of Gilbert Highland second at 37.44.
Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor senior Aiden Harvey broke his own school records in the Division I boys 100 dash with a state championship time of 10.48. He came into the finals with the top qualifying mark of 10.61, set on Wednesday when he established the school record.
Harvey is coached by former Glendale Deer Valley football and sprint great Trae Armstrong with former Deer Valley football and track coach Eric Bulos.
“I was just trying to go crazy this week, pop off with some really good times,” Harvey said.
Luke Stalus of Desert Vista won the 400 dash in 47.84 seconds.
Chandler Basha’s Jacob Kauffman, after finishing second in the pole vault to Hamilton’s Jagger Wilkes at the Chandler Rotary, won the state title at 16 feet, 7 inches. Wilkes was second at 15-0.
Mason Hickel of Desert Vista won the shot put at 61 feet followed by Chandler junior Amar Elmore (53-11 1/2).
Division III
American Leadership Queen Creek junior Logan Hubler, the football team’s quarterback, turned in an impressive 110 hurdles time of 14.49 to win his first state title in that even. His teammate, Kawai King, was second at 14.91
“All of the work that we put in all through the season, we’ve been working hard for it, it finally paid off,” Hubler said.
Hubler returned to win the 300 hurdles in 38.18 seconds.
In the boys 100, Tempe Marcos de Niza senior Tyrik Jones won in 10.62, followed by Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep junior John Ruvo, who broke a school record with a time of 10.69.
“I was hoping for first obviously,” Ruvo said. “I think if I had a better start, I definitely would have gone a better time.”
Joshua Landers of Buckeye Odyssey Institute won the 400 title at 49.46, just edging out St. Mary’s Pierce Vittone, who ran 49.55
Tristan Carrera, Justin Provenzano, Emeka Ogbonna and Adam Damante teamed up to give American Leadership Gilbert North the state title in the 4×100 relay at 42.28.
Snowflake won the 4×800 title behind Caleb Anson, Noah Fish, Trey Flake and anchor Kaden Clark.
