It had six Diamondbacks on it: Goldschmidt, shortstop Chris Owings, third baseman Jake Lamb, outfielder David Peralta and pitchers Robbie Ray and Zack Greinke.
Santo wrote of Goldschmidt: “Goldschmidt is leading NL first basemen in runs scored, hits, RBI and on-base percentage.”
Paul Goldschmidt’s decency, quiet leadership and lack of self-promotion is probably costing him #MLB All Star votes https://t.co/awAEd7SIAH
He wrote of Owings: “Very solid all-around numbers, and the D-Backs deserve some shine.”
Of Lamb, Santo said: “Lamb could vie for the starting spot, as is tied with Bryant for the most home runs among NL third baseman and also leads the group with 61 RBI.”
What about Peralta? Santo writes: “An excellent .377 on-base percentage and .869 OPS.”
As for Ray, Santo writes: “Ray boasts a 1.32 road ERA with 114 strikeouts as well.”
And finally, for Greinke, Santo writes: “He’s back – and now his team’s so good, he probably won’t get traded this summer.”
Goldschmidt figures to be a lock to make the All-Star team, but Lovullo said other Diamondbacks are just as deserving such as Lamb, Greinke and Ray and closer Fernando Rodney.
Rodney has 20 saves for the Diamondbacks and has been virtually unhittable after a shaky start to the season.
Fernando Rodney should be an All Star and my brain is oozing out of my ears as I type this.
Lovullo said it’s not his style to pick up the phone and politic with NL All-Star manager Joe Maddon of the Cubs to help get certain players named to the squad.
Asked if Goldschmidt were to be the only Diamondbacks player to make the All-Star team, Lovullo said, “I would be a little bit surprised by that.”
He writes: “That Goldschmidt will make his fifth straight NL All-Star team isn’t a question. That he’s running fourth in the voting, well, we can quibble with that. Goldschmidt is one of baseball’s greatest players and true gentlemen. His 2.6 WAR is fourth best in the NL. Goldschmidt’s offensive numbers line up nicely in a crowded field with Freeman, Ryan Zimmerman, Joey Votto and Eric Thames. Arguably one of the toughest votes on the ballot.”
He writes: “It will be tough for Maddon to ignore the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Paul Goldschmidt, who is putting together an MVP-caliber season in the desert.”
He writes: “Lamb did not appear among the top five NL vote-getters at third base in the last voting update released a week ago, yet he had the league’s second-highest on-base plus slugging percentage (.974) going into Monday’s games. His 19 homers and 58 RBI rank third at the position, but he’s in a tough field with Kris Bryant and Nolan Arenado also enjoying banner seasons, and Matt Carpenter (now playing second) also in the mix.”
