The defending 4A girls basketball state champion Chandler Seton Catholic’s senior guard Amanda Barcello has begun the new academic year by finalizing her college decision.
The 6-foot wing announced her verbally commitment to Brigham Young in a post on her Instagram account Tuesday.
“I chose BYU because it’s a program that will not only help me grow as an athlete but also as an individual,” Barcello told The Republic. “I have built amazing relationships with the coaches and feel like they genuinely have my best interest at heart and will push me to be better everyday.”
She helped lead Seton Catholic to its 11th state title in program history in March, averaging 9.8 points, a team-best 8.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 blocks last season.
Barcello is also the younger sister of BYU men’s basketball senior guard and former Tempe Corona del Sol standout Alex Barcello. He played his freshman and sophomore collegiate seasons at Arizona before transferring to BYU.
“I have always strived to find a team where the girls are more than just teammates, I wanted to find a place where the girls have a family bond and look at one another like sisters do,” Barcello said. “I found this in BYU and knew that it was the right place to be. I’m going to have an abundance of people who have my back in the BYU community and all of this support just made it feel like home to me.
