SAN DIEGO — When Jake Lamb was asked about his struggles against left-handed pitching earlier this week, he didn’t deny them, but he also pointed out he hadn’t been feeling all that comfortable against right-handers, either.

It didn’t take long for that to change. Lamb clobbered a pair of home runs against the San Diego Padres on Friday night, leading the way for the Diamondbacks in a 10-1 romp at Petco Park.

After the first multi-homer game of his career, Lamb has gone deep in three consecutive games. In the past week, he is 12 for 25 (.480) with a double, four homers and five walks. Following a two-week slump, the Diamondbacks have their middle-of-the-order slugger back.

“I’m feeling really good,” Lamb said. “For the most part, I’m taking pitches that I shouldn’t be swinging at and attacking balls up in the zone.”

The Diamondbacks did all the attacking on Friday night. They scored eight runs in the first inning – seven of them charged to right-hander Jered Weaver – getting a combined six hits and five walks in a half-inning that took 35 minutes. It was plenty of support for Diamondbacks right-hander Taijuan Walker, who breezed through six shutout innings.

The 10 runs represented the kind of outburst the Diamondbacks hope will bring an end to their offensive struggles on the road, though it’s worth noting they scored 11 runs at Petco Park on April 18 only to manage one more run combined in the final two games of that series. Entering Friday, the Diamondbacks were the league’s best-hitting team at home and its worst on the road.

“Like I’ve been saying since the first month, I think that it was kind of exaggerated, or whatever the word is, for that early in the season,” said Diamondbacks second baseman Brandon Drury, who also homered in the win. “I think when the season is at the end, those numbers are going to be pretty similar.”

With two on in the first, Lamb got a 1-2 fastball from Weaver and destroyed it, sending it out to right field to give the Diamondbacks an early 3-0 lead. In the sixth, he hit a change-up from Craig Stammen into the bullpen area beyond left-center field.

“He hit that thing a long way,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “That’s the type of swing we’re looking for. We know he’s doing a lot of things right when you can hit a ball that far to the opposite field.”

Lamb said he’d been “late on everything” in recent weeks, and so at the suggestion of hitting coach Dave Magadan he started hitting before games off a high-velocity pitching machine. He doesn’t know how hard the machine spits out balls, but he says it’s fast enough to help.

“It’s just quick enough that you can’t really have any holes in the swing,” he said. “It’ll really show you where your holes are. You’ve got to be on time and have a clean bat path. It’s something I’ve never really done. It was a struggle the first couple days, and then I got it going. I like where I’m at right now.”
