Higley two-sport standout Jason Harris has narrowed his college list to six schools and it includes the school closest to home — Arizona State. But the Sun Devils are likely going to have a tough time keeping him away from their most bitter rival Arizona.

Harris (6-foot, 220-pounds), who is a power forward in basketball and pass-rushing defensive end in football, is considering the two Arizona schools, along with Oregon, Colorado, UCLA and Texas A&M.

He narrowed his choice to those schools from a list of 24 that included nine Pac-12 schools and five SEC schools.

ASU is also among the five Division I offers he has in basketball.

He said he doesn’t have a timeline for when he will announce his choice.

“It’s an important decision so I am taking my time and making sure I make an educated decision,” he said.  “The six I have narrowed it down to are all great schools so I can’t go wrong.”

Both Rivals and 247Sports project Arizona as the winner in the Harris sweepstakes. Both of his parents were athletes at Arizona with his father Sean a standout in football from 1991 to 1994, serving as team captain as a senior and going on to play seven seasons in the NFL with the Bears and Colts.

His mother Cha-Ron played basketball for the Wildcats

Jalen Harris, Jason’s older brother, will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall. He drew considerable playing time last year as a freshman, starting the last four games at linebacker.

But he says there is no pressure for him to follow in his family members to Tucson.

“They want me to make the best decision for me,” he said. “They want me to pick the situation that is going to be the right one for me.”

He took an unofficial visit to Oregon in April as well as an official trip to Arizona last month. He also scheduled a trip to Texas A&M for September, but has yet to make plans to visit any others.

Harris says he has a “passion” for both sports. He averaged a double-double in basketball — 20.4 points and 10.4 rebounds. Among his better games was a 36-point, 10-rebound effort in a 72-64 loss to Cienaga.

He said he hasn’t decided whether or not he will try to play two sports but acknowledges it would be difficult because the seasons overlap.

The Sun Devils will have another two-sport athlete in the Class of 2020 in Blake Shapen out of Louisiana’s Evangel Christian. But his other sport is baseball which is a spring sport so those don’t overlap.

“I really like both sports equally,” Harris said. “I am just working on getting my body right for football and then we’ll see what happens. I haven’t thought that far ahead but I wouldn’t rule it out.”

The recruiting process can be stressful at times but Harris says he is enjoying it and benefited from watching his brother go through it just a few years ago.

The ASU coaches with whom he has been in contact are defensive line coach Jamar Cain and linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator Antonio Pierce.

Harris says his rapport with the coaches of the school will be an instrumental part of his decision.

“I know things aren’t always going to be easy so I want to be where I have a lot of trust in the coaches,” Harri said. “That is a big thing for me.”

ASU currently has 13 verbal commitments for the class of 2020. Arizona has 10. Neither has yet to land a commitment from a defensive lineman.
