The NBA moratorium ended on Saturday, which finalized all of its teams’ pending trades from before, during and after its draft on June 20 and through the free agency signing period that began on June 30.
Those transactions include the Phoenix Suns trade of Josh Jackson, De’Anthony Melton, a 2020 second-round pick and 2021 conditional second-round pick for Memphis Grizzlies guard Jevon Carter and forward Kyle Korver on July 3.
Korver was waived by the Suns after the deal was completed to save salary cap space, allowing him to become a free agent, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Carter is a 6-2, 195-pound point guard entering his second season in the NBA. He brings more insurance at the currently overloaded point guard spot alongside the Suns’ new free agent signee Ricky Rubio, Elie Okobo, Tyler Johnson, and their latest draft choices Jalen Lecque and Ty Jerome.
Carter averaged 4.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 39 games played for the Grizzlies during his rookie season in 2018-19. He was the No. 32 pick in the second round, one selection after the Suns’ No. 31 selection Elie Okobo in the 2018 NBA Draft.
The West Virginia alum spent some of his first NBA season on the Grizzlies G-League affiliate Memphis Hustle’s roster. He averaged 18.4 points, 6.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 steals on 43.3% field goal shooting, 33.3% from beyond the arc in 22 games.
A defensive specialist, Carter racked up awards during his college days. He was the the 2017-18 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, two-time winner of the NABC Defensive Player of the Year, Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year and Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards. He’s a former All-American Second Team selection who was second in the nation in steal (3.03) steals as a senior.
