An extended power outage in several terminals at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday evening forced Southwest Airlines to cancel outgoing flights from the airport, including several that were scheduled to arrive in Phoenix late in the day.

Los Angeles airport officials posted updates about the situation on its Twitter account. Just before 9:30 p.m., the airport announced Southwest was canceling all outgoing flights for the evening.

According to Southwest’s website, the power outage forced cancellation of four flights that originated in Los Angeles and were scheduled to arrive in Phoenix, including direct flights that had been scheduled to arrive at 8 p.m., 9:05 p.m. and 12:05 a.m. Thursday. In addition, a connecting flight to Phoenix scheduled to arrive at 11:35 p.m., from San Jose, which was to originate in Los Angeles, also was canceled.

Two other connecting flights were listed as delayed that originated in Los Angeles — from Sacramento and Oakland.

American Airlines, the other major carrier based in Phoenix along with Southwest, showed its last flight into Phoenix scheduled for 9:05 p.m. had arrived.

The Los Angeles International Airport Twitter account first posted a tweet about the outage about 8 p.m., saying in subsequent tweets that power was slowly being restored. Among the areas that were disrupted was Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening for boarding passengers, according to one tweet.
