A man in his 40s was struck by a Valley Metro light-rail train Wednesday morning at 19th and Montebello avenues, Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Rob McDade said.
The man was trapped underneath the light-rail train, Phoenix fire officials tweeted. Firefighters used special airbags to lift up a portion of the train and free the man.
The man is in “extremely critical condition” and was taken to a trauma hospital, McDade said.
Buses will be brought in to serve riders.
This comes just two weeks after another pedestrian was hit by a light-rail train in downtown Phoenix at the First Avenue and Van Buren Street station after slipping and falling onto the tracks, said Phoenix Police Department spokesman Tommy Thompson.
The victim in that incident, 54-year-old Rodrigo Travino, later died of his injuries, Thompson said.
