The wife of an off-duty Salt River Police Department officer was critically injured during the Las Vegas shooting rampage Sunday night that killed 59 people and injured more than 500 during a country music festival.

A Salt River police commander created a GoFundMe account for Officer Francisco Calzadillas and his wife, Jovanna. The fundraising site reported Jovanna was in extremely critical condition and on life support.

On Monday evening, medical staff were trying to reduce swelling from the wound with the intention of re-evaluating her condition for surgery, said Lt. Anthony Sandoval of the Salt River Police Department.

The agency said the couple were attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival concert. The officer was not injured.

Jovanna Martinez Calzadillas hails from Hayden, Ariz., according to Carlos Galindo-Elvira, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League in Arizona.

News of the shooting rippled through the tight-knit community, said Galindo-Elvira, who grew up in the former copper-mining town.

“In these small towns, certainly there is a good deal of pain involved, and shared, for such a senseless tragedy,” Galindo-Elvira said. “It’s a tragic day for our country, for Arizona and for a small town in the heart of Arizona when a young person becomes a victim. … Too many times we have seen this scenario of a gun in the hand of a determined killer.”

The GoFundMe account had raised nearly $23,000 in six hours Monday.
