TAMPA, Fla. – A tough bounce against the Coyotes stood up as the decisive play in the game until they used a three-goal third period to rally past the Lightning for a 5-3 win Tuesday at Amalie Arena to improve to 1-1 on their five-game road trip.

Winger Radim Vrbata converted the game-winner during 4-on-4 action 6:39 into the third period, his team-leading 18th goal, after defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson tied it at 3 just 4:54 into the period on a shot from inside the blue line – his second in as many games after a 21-game drought. Later in the period, the Coyotes added another when defenseman Connor Murphy’s clear deflected off defenseman Victor Hedman’s glove as he tried to knock it down and fell into an empty net for a short-handed tally with 1:36 to go.

Ekman-Larsson’s goal came on the heels of a fluky goal-against late in the second. With 1:52 left in the period, center Vladislav Namestnikov – alone in front after accepting a Jonathan Drouin pass – rang a shot off the post but the rebound bounced off winger Anthony Duclair and over goalie Louis Domingue to put the Lightning ahead. Earlier in the period, Duclair almost put the Coyotes up with a back-door shot that Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy managed to get a piece of to keep the score tied.

Arizona led early with winger Lawson Crouse retrieving a Vasilevskiy bobble behind the net and setting up winger Christian Fischer for a mostly empty-net goal at 4:56 of the first period – his third goal in just his fourth NHL game after getting recalled earlier in the day from the American Hockey League. Tampa Bay tied it at 9:45 when Hedman got a jump on defenseman Alex Goligoski before sending the puck glove-side on Domingue.

The Coyotes persevered, going up 2-1 at 10:06 of the second when center Christian Dvorak finished a 2-on-1 with winger Max Domi, but the Lightning tied it at 2 at 11:50 on a one-timer from winger Nikita Kucherov after Goligoski’s clearing attempt was intercepted by winger Ondrej Palat before he fed Kucherov. Domingue finished with 36 saves, while Vasilevskiy had 30. Arizona went 0-for-2 on the power play; Tampa Bay was 0-for-4.
