A four-vehicle crash on the eastbound Interstate 10 injured five people, trapped another and shut down part of the highway for hours Sunday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. near the Interstate 17 interchange. As of 7:45 p.m., officials were still re-routing traffic to I-17 and telling drivers to expect delays.

It was not immediately clear how the crash unfolded. Department of Public Safety officials said one of the vehicles had been “speeding and traveling in and out of traffic” prior to the collision.

Four adults and one child were taken to the hospital, but their injuries were not life-threatening, said Phoenix Fire Capt. Reda Biger.

As of about 8 p.m., one other person was still trapped in a vehicle, according to DPS.

The westbound I-10 remained open.
