Expectations for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season weren’t all that high after a disappointing 69-93 season in 2016.
At 37-25, the team is shattering those low expectations.
It isn’t the first time a pro sports team in Arizona has surprised (in a good way).

This year’s Diamondbacks appear to be well on their way to becoming one of the Valley’s most surprising professional sports teams.
Here are some other Arizona pro teams that did way better than people expected:
2013-14 Suns
The Suns went 48-34 and just missed the playoffs in the first year under Jeff Hornacek. The team had gone 25-57 the previous year.
2013 Cardinals
In the first year under coach Bruce Arians, the Arizona Cardinals just missed playoffs at 10-6. They went 5-11 the previous season.
2011-12 Coyotes
The Coyotes won the Pacific Division with 97 points and advanced all the way to the Western Conference Finals, where they lost to the Kings and missed out on a Stanley Cup berth.

2011 Diamondbacks
Arizona went 94-68 after going just 65-97 the year before. The team fell to the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series, 3-2.
2009-10 Suns
Phoenix made the Western Conference Finals under Alvin Gentry and went 54-28 on season. Gentry had taken over for Terry Porter near the end of the previous season.
2009-10 Coyotes
The Coyotes had 107 points a year after recording just 79. The team fell just short in the Western Conference quarterfinals, losing to the Red Wings in seven games.
2008 Cardinals
Arizona went just 9-7 on the season (and lost to the Patriots 47-7 in Week 16). However, Kurt Warner and company caught fire in the playoffs, where they made the Super Bowl and came within seconds (and inches) of winning it.

2007 Diamondbacks
Arizona went 90-72 and made the National League Championship Series after going 76-86 and finishing in 4th place in the NL West the year before.
2004-2005 Suns
A year after going just 28-53, Phoenix shocked the league on its way to a 62-20 mark under Mike D’Antoni, with Steve Nash leading the way to the Western Conference Finals. It was the team’s first Pacific Division title since 1995.
1999-2000 Suns
Phoenix went 53-29 and made the Western Conference semifinals even with a coaching change during season (Danny Ainge to Scott Skiles) and a slew of injuries. Kevin Johnson even came out of retirement to help the team for its playoff run.
1999 Diamondbacks
In just the second year of existence, Arizona went 100-62 after going 65-97 the year before. The team lost to the Mets in the National League Division Series, 3-1.

1998 Cardinals
A year after going 4-12, the Cardinals went 9-7 with QB Jake Plummer and won a Wild Card Playoff game over the Cowboys in Dallas.
1988-89 Suns
After finishing just 28-54 the year before, Phoenix went 55-27 and advanced to the Western Conference Finals. They hadn’t been to the playoffs for three seasons.
1975-76 Suns
The Suns went 42-40 in the regular season, but made it all the way to the NBA finals for the first time in franchise history, where they lost to the Celtics.
